Captain Tom

Even as Captain Tom lay in hospital fighting for life, a group of young men, who probably owe their existence to men like him, gathered together, unlawfully, to watch a football match endangering themselves and their families.
They knew they were doing wrong, with the arrival of the police they jumped over a balcony and ran away.
Cowardly, selfishly, no doubt alive with 'woke' sentiments and an over inflated belief in their own self entitlement, they deserve nothing but derision and scorn.

There are, unfortunately, too many people in the UK who have not taken the situation seriously right from the very beginning, which is why we are still in the situation we are in.

I think the main cause of his demise was pneumonia Sol - he'd been having treatment for that since Christmas but tested positive to Covid 19 in the last few days.

It's strange to think that, for most of his life, he was just another guy - an old soldier from that "greatest generation"  who'd obviously had a good innings.  Then, suddenly, he was thrust into the limelight - not doing anything particularly spectacular, in spite of his age, but somthing that grabbed the attention of the media and thence, the public.

The results we all know but to me, he was a classic example of someone being in exactly the right place at exactly the right time.

I sincerely hope the remarkable sum he raised is being spent for the genuine benefit of those front line workers for whom it was intended and not to plug the holes left by a lack of state investment.

Am I being cynical if I say I doubt it ……………………… :hmm

Captain Tom, as Peter said, didn't do anything really spectacular, but what came of it was with the £39 million, I'm told his rank was raised to Colonel? There's also talk about a state funeral which is a bit rediculous!

As for Covid in the UK, too little done too late, also there should have been bigger fines for much more people who flaunt the rules.

Phil - I hadn't heard about the State Funeral but I totally agree with you - it's just crazy.

For heavens sake, that would put him amongst the likes of Royalty, Wellington, Nelson and Churchill.  He is most certainly not in that category and the very suggestion proves just how mad the country has become. Even a "Ceremonial Funeral" as accorded to Princess Diana, would be going way too far - IMHO !

What he did, I maintain, was not extraordinary but it did inspire the public, via the media coverage, to donate huge sums to a very worthy cause.  The right man, in the right place, at the right time.

To old fogies like me, I think the honours system has become a bit of a joke.  My father was awarded the MBE for his efforts during WW2.  I recall we had the devil's own job persuading him not to return it when the Beatles got theirs !

RIP Captain Sir Tom.
I only wish that I had thought of the wheeze first.  My railway shed is at the end of my 90 foot garden.  If I had been sponsored for every journey I have made between house and shed over the years, we could have paid of any NHS debt and the National Defence Budget at the same time!

Think they should do something like print Sir Tom on the next released bank note.

With respect, I think things should be put into perspective, Winston Churchill, Isaac Newton and the like are on banknotes because of years of achievement, Yes Sir Tom did a great thing by raising £27m by walking around his garden 100 times over a period of days, apart from that he served in the war the same as millions of others, if he hadn't have raised this money, he wouldn't have had a military funeral even

…the bitter irony for me is that he died  of Corona virus, in a hospital, a safe place that he had raised funds for.

The other elephant in the room is the despair over the quoted  60% proportion of the victims being 'disabled' without any reference to the fact that they are that proportion of the community most likely to be  attended on by 'carers', who probably move between patients.

In what passes for my mind, I had a feeling that they should have been the first recipients  of vaccinations and access to professional standards of PPE.
