On the 12th of May I was cutting down bushes on a "Devon bank" behind us and I fell backwards onto rocks 9 feet below and broke several ribs.   The pain was absolutely terrible and the painkillers aren't working!   My wife Jo had to phone 999 on that day and again on the following Friday and paramedics came out both times.  Spoke to Doc and they will take up to 2 months to heal so what a prospect — but it is getting a bit easier now.

However, that's the good bit!!!   Since February I can hardly talk at all coupled with awful throat problems, difficulty in swallowing food and drink plus a host of other problems.   Anyway, three weeks ago I was rushed into Hospital and came out a week ago with the terrible news that I have Motor Neurone Disease so I'm on the way out!

I would like to sell my N scale Coombe Hinton layout so perhaps someone here may be interested; I also have lots of brand new and slightly used GWR & SR Locos, Carriages and Wagons plus lots of scenic materials.   I haven't got the time or energy to give full details but could probably do some photos.

I'm 85 and I've always been so fit playing tennis - I'm the oldest one in the club and could always go on all day -until January when I had to stop; also cycling and being a pressional modern jazz musician playing Vibes - a very physical instrument - and have made loads of CDs etc so now to have to give this all up is really terrible for me.   I'm not really making a fuss but it's just so damn disappointing particularly as Jo and I will have been married 60 years on the 23rd July, our diamond wedding!

Ken.

PS: I've posted this on my Coombe Hinton layout page.

Hi Ken
I am so sorry to hear your news. The last 6 months must have been devastating for you both.

I guess we have been corresponding and following one anothers threads for over a decade. I have always admired the precision and accuracy of your models……and we are talking N gauge.

I would have hoped that you might be able to retain Combe Hinton in some shape or form….it has given you so much pleasure over the years……but if it cannot be, then at least I hope it goes to a good home.

My very best wishes from your internet friend in Canada

John

Hi Ken,

Health issues – and the rest! Very sorry to hear about your troubles. I went over the handlebars on my bike the other week onto grass – and that hurt! (can't imagine falling 8' onto rocks)

I hope you recover quickly from your fall, and hopefully your previous good health will help you with your battle against Motor Neurone Disease.

Best wishes to you and your wife

Gordon

Ken,
Words don't exist to say how sad I am to hear this news, you are a great modeller and clearly have packed a lot of quality time into life so far. I hope you find a deserving buyer for C.H..
My thoughts are with you and 'Mrs Ken',
Your admiring fellow YMR modeller,

Douglas

Doug has echoed what most of us will say Ken - we actually don't know what to say - what a horrible shock for you both - and for us too.  The more so because as you say, you're such an active guy who could certainly put many far younger than you, to shame.

At times like this, one wonders who is pulling the strings ……………………

I'm with John in that I don't know if Combe Hinton can still give you some further pleasure Ken, but if there's any chance, I'd urge you to hang on to it as long as you can.

Our thoughts are most definitely with you but, other than being  virtual friends, we're about as much use to you as a chocolate  fire-guard at this moment.

So sorry to read your news.
Words are not much use at times like this except to let you know that you have many many virtual friends who are praying for you both at the moment, Stick it to em mate and hang on to that layout.

Sorry Ken,  I think everyone else here has summed it up pretty well!  As Doug said, try to hang on to CH as long as possible and add a few more buildings or details if you can… even if only to maintain what you can.  And you have taught us as much or more as we have you!

Sorry Ken, what devastating news. I can only echo what has already been said here.
Small consolation but we are all thinking of you and your family at this traumatic time for you all.

Ken,this is devastating news.I echo John's thoughts about holding on to the layout for as long as possible. You've put far too much into it to give it up too easily. When it really becomes too much for you,THEN you'll know the time is right…in the meantime, enjoy your creation as we all do!
Cheers,John.B.

Thanks for your kind thoughts everyone but I'm getting so weak I just don't feel like doing anything!
I just sold my car back to the dealer - they were very kind and accommodating to me - and sold my wonderful Trixon Vibraphone on eBay (a real collectors item which I bought in 1963 from the UK's best ever modern jazz player Tubby Hayes) so my life is just about finished!   ( If anyone would like to hear me playing click on Youtube and put in:  Ken Church (Vibes) = get your ear plugs ready!!!

I loved listening to 'Summertime', one of my all time 'go to' tunes for relaxing to. All 'favourited' for later listening, thank you. 'God Rest Ye M.G.' from a new perspective, too. It must be a wonderful gift to be able to improvise like that.

Ken - your post was such a sad post and I know we all feel for you but can do absolutely nothing to pick your spirits up a little.  At times like this, clever though we think we are, we're pretty darned useless.

Some time ago, you sent me some links to your playing - I hate to admit it but think it was perhaps when I thought, to my shame,  that you played a xylophone !!!  You very quickly, and rather kindly I must add, put me right.

Since then, I have enjoyed your music and this latest You Tube link has given yet more enjoyment to those who've listened - I didn't bother with the ear plugs !!!

As I said Ken, there's little we can do other than offer moral support and to let you know you're very much in our thoughts and, for those who do, our prayers.  Such an awful thing to have to bear.
