Upgrading an old building

Just for fun I wondered what could be done with these venerable old buiuldings that graced many layouts in the 1960s.  In their gaudy colours they were very much from the trainset era.  However, they are of a nice size, can be picked up cheaply and nowadays the inevitable small pats can be bought on the second hand market.

The building that I decided to work on was the little waiting room:

Top of the range in their day !!  Wow - haven't things changed since then.  Looking forward to seeing how you tackle it Bob and, of course, the end result. :thumbs3:

I wanted to put something on the inside of the building and of course glaze the windows.  The first challenge was removing the roof, which was firmly stuck down.  However, with a bit of effort I was able to ease it off without doing any damage.  I used a piece of card as an internal dividing wall in the area of the male toilet, then added some clear plastic glazing.  Once set, I replaced the roof, added a repro chimney and set about painting.

I think the building is based upon a GWR design, so I used appropriate colours of dark and light stone.  I did not paint the main walls which were moulded in a brick red, but used powders to dull down the plastic look.

Here is the result of my efforts.  I will not be using this on a layout, but not a bad result for anyone seeking cheap and easily obtainable structures for their layout:

Please ignore the thumbs down I accidentally did - trying to click the thumbs up and the page jumped as it finished loading.

I like what you've done with this venerable old model. It is amazing what can be done with a little bit of imagination. I used an old, battered Hornby Dublo signal box for just such a detailing project.
