how to.. Or how not to     make water quickly

1 Prepare the base this is the subjective bit Ive chosen a beach this time, the principals are the same light colours first darken for depth, unless you want an underwater shelf effect Id try and merge any changes of colour. I use Acrylics as they suit my style (fast drying)

Sand Colour

A mix of Sand blue and green (thas not really Mrs RJRs best tuperware !)

Silicone (the pics speak for themselves) the spreader is scrap balsa, apply and spread about a bit

The second layer, the first is still wet. I find the second layer easier to handle as the first one, you have to apply a reasonable amount of pressure to ensure the base it completely covered. The spreader is held along the required waves. ( I have several precut and throw them away when they get too sticky)

Once you have the general look the silicon can be teased up by touching the spreader on the surface and teasing the silicon up.

The biggest trick is to add some scenic distraction to stop people looking too closely at the water…. In this case a bikini !! At this stage the white enamel paint is gently added to the crest of the waves with an old brush (Silicon on new brushes is no fun !!)

All that is needed now is a light and a decent camera angle

This may not be the best way of making water but its fast and cheap. The beach scene took about 20mins
For still water dont ripple as much, you can smooth the surface when its wet by gently wiping a damp finger over it.
I fit bathrooms and kitchens and believe me no liquid is better for putting on your finger to smooth it out than spit, as unpleasant as that sounds (use your own !!) Dont press hard and keep your finger damp.

I could just get out the deckchairs,a nice book and a picnic and chill out on that beach!!! Very effective, and a great tutorial. When I tackle "the big one in the loft",and come to doing my sea, this will prove invaluable!

Nicely done,
So choppy that Floatie Boy is going to be hard pressed to get his ball back unless it's a sea breeze :!:
The technique would be good for a weir I imagine, will the silicon work OK if in contact with either the epoxy "water" products or a varnished river?
I fancy the smooth varnish for the mill pond on Newcastle Emlyn and then something not so smooth for the weir?
Any thoughts anyone?

What a good idea, I would never have thought and it looks as good as any beach scene I have scene. Additional benefit of you know it would never crack as it stays rubbery. I can only imagine the stink when doing it, that stuff smells like vinegar on chips lol

Nothing wrong with vinegar on chips
