Is this normal or do I need to reset something ?

When reading my messages, I read them through a tiny slit as in a tank or wildlife hide …..

The slit is only around 6 lines of type deep.

When reading type, whilst a bit of a pain, it's not a disaster.  When trying to look at a picture, it really is a disaster.  I have to scroll down the picture and try to remember what's disappeared off the top of the viewing slit.

Do I need to adjust / reset / tweak something ?

Hi Peter,

All the stuff you didn't say:

What device are you using? Is this a computer screen, a mobile phone, a tablet, something else?

If it's a computer is it Windows or Apple Mac?

What browser are you using? Microsoft Edge, Chrome, Firefox, something else?

When did this start happening? Recently or ages ago?

What is on the screen above and below this narrow slit?

Does the same thing happen on other web sites, other than YMRC?

If it's a Windows computer, the first thing to try is to hold down the Ctrl key and press the F5 key on the top row.

cheers,

Martin.

Hi Martin

Thanks for your reply.

It matters not a jot what device I'm using - tablet, laptop or desktop - I always get the same "slit" to read messages.

Currently, I'm on my desktop - Windows 10 Home Edition.

My browser is Firefox.

It's a long standing problem which I've largely ignored but it would be good if I could correct it.

The screen above and below the "slit" is the rest of the page - i.e. the normal messages header above and the list of previous messages below.  If I knew how to take and post a screen shot, I could post it on here ………………

I tried the F 5 and Ctrl keys.  When reading the current message, the screen just reduced the size of everything.

What I'm hoping to do is to bring the current message up to either fill the screen or be able to use the cursor to "drag" the scroll bar to enlarge the area I'm viewing but there's neither that little double headed arrow and an ability to "lock" onto the bottom of the "slit" to drag it down the screen.

Opening the message page is normal (I think) in that I get the whole of my message list on the screen.

The problem is, trying to enlarge the section I'm reading beyond that "slit".  Maybe a screen shot would explain better than I can but how do I do that ????

Hi Peter, it's always been like that as far as I can remember ?
To view the full image :-

On your Computer hover the mouse cursor over the image, right click and select 'open image in new tab' from the drop down menu. . Change to That tab and you can view the full size image. When done simply close that tab and go back to your messages tab.

On tablet or phone press and hold on the image with your finger unt the drop down menu opens, then as above.

Note I select 'Open image in new tab' rather than simply ' open image' so that your messages remain open in the other browser window

HTH

Cheers

Matt

Hi Peter,

Did you mean PRIVATE messages?

They have always been like that on UltraBB forums.

The trick I use to read them is to click on the Reply button.

You can then read the whole message easily. You don't have to make a reply, just click the Back button in your browser to go back to the message list.

I will have a look and see if the private message viewing window can be made bigger.

cheers,

Martin.

Hi Peter,

I have increased the slit from 150 to 500 tall. Is that better?

I've never bothered looking at it before, because on my boards I have always disabled private messages.

It means allowing my server, which I am responsible for, to contain material which I don't know about (without crawling through the database). Alan might want to think about that too. Members can easily contact each other by email.

cheers,

Martin.

Thanks a million guys - Martin - yes that's much better - many thanks - oh and yes, I did mean Private Messages and I do recall you neither use nor like them ………

Matt - even at my great age, one can still learn things ………  I had no idea that's how it works but great, I can now see the whole image in one go although, since Martin altered the "slit", most now appear in their entirety on the message.  :doublethumb
