Even SWMBO who sometimes appears to be marginally more wedded to her iPad than me, reverts to my desktop to pay her bills etc. and as we all know, she can't be WRONG!

Seeing your reply, Ron, I changed from dark mode to normal and there it is. Invisible in dark mode but plain as day now :roll:this is how I see the date on my PC

I must confess that even my desktop Windows seems to be doing some odd things regarding "Dark Mode". The other day I went to a regular site I use and it too was plunged into Dark Mode for some arbitrary reason. I don't have that selected on my system but somehow the program decided I needed it. Getting back to my usual settings was a PITA!
Why can't "THEY" leave it all alone? "if it 'aint broke" etc.
Which reminds me of that quaint English trait perhaps dating back to WWII days. My friend's Mum used always to refer to "THEY", this invisible and mysterious group responsible for heaping all and every woe on folk whenever anything at all went wrong. Remember that?
Well "THEY" seem to have a lot to answer for right now in Old Blighty as it happens.

I've tinkered with it, kicked it and done other unmentionable things to it but it refuses to respond.
Admittedly, it is an old computer but, like old clothes, it was "comfortable", "homely" and understood my fingers so I used it in preference to my other gadgets whish run Windows 10.
Apparently, replacing the hard drive won't require a new OS license - or so they say but I do wonder if that's the same for old versions of Windows.
A replacement 1Tb Seagrave Barracuda hard drive appears to have a price range of between €50 and €350 !!! I wonder what the difference is …………… :hmm
I wouldn't bother but I really need some stuff from there which, rather foolishly, I didn't back up.

I'm pretty sure it's the actual hard drive that's died - diagnostics says "can't find hard drive" or words to that effect.
Having looked online, I wonder if it's possible to recover some of the data using data recovery software. If the drive doesn't work, I doubt that would be possible.
It seems to load my windows home screen together with all my shortcuts etc. but when I try to reset the time and date (it's gone back to April 2012 !!), the little wheel just goes round and round and nothing happens……….
Your ideas would be greatly appreciated therefore …………………. :cheers
