I don't know if my memory's playing tricks on me, but I think we used to have a date on each post. Am I going senile or is the date missing?

Cheers Pete.

I believe that doesn't always show on phone screens depending on your screen settings and operating system.

I use an iMac and macbook air and there's definitely no date stamp. I've just looked through my preferences and there's nothing in there that I can change for this.

Us Luddites have no issues, clearly. It's all these newfangled smart tech devices, I have an iPhone and it has very many merits indeed but IMHO using the internet via Safari is not one of them.

Even SWMBO who sometimes appears to be marginally more wedded to her iPad than me, reverts to my desktop to pay her bills etc. and as we all know, she can't be WRONG!

Seeing your reply, Ron, I changed from dark mode to normal and there it is. Invisible in dark mode but plain as day now

Now there's a first. Apple have this wonderful "Dark Mode" where you can't see things, LOL!

I must confess that even my desktop Windows seems to be doing some odd things regarding "Dark Mode". The other day I went to a regular site I use and it too was plunged into Dark Mode for some arbitrary reason. I don't have that selected on my system but somehow the program decided I needed it. Getting back to my usual settings was a PITA!

Why can't "THEY" leave it all alone? "if it 'aint broke" etc.

Which reminds me of that quaint English trait perhaps dating back to WWII days. My friend's Mum used always to refer to "THEY", this invisible and mysterious group responsible for heaping all and every woe on folk whenever anything at all went wrong. Remember that?

Well "THEY" seem to have a lot to answer for right now in Old Blighty as it happens.

It appears my desktop running Windows Home XP also has a "Dark Mode" - the hard drive decided to go AWOL !!
I've tinkered with it, kicked it and done other unmentionable things to it but it refuses to respond.

Admittedly, it is an old computer but, like old clothes, it was "comfortable", "homely" and understood my fingers so I used it in preference to my other gadgets whish run Windows 10.

Apparently, replacing the hard drive won't require a new OS license - or so they say but I do wonder if that's the same for old versions of Windows.

A replacement 1Tb Seagrave Barracuda hard drive appears to have a price range of between €50 and €350 !!!  I wonder what the difference is …………… :hmm

I wouldn't bother but I really need some stuff from there which, rather foolishly, I didn't back up.

The possible bad news Peter is that if its an older machine with one hard drive and the hard drive has failed, your data is ON that hard drive. If its the machine that is dead then you may have a chance as the hard drive itself may be ok. Let me know if you want some 'remote assistance'  :thumbs
Cheers

Thanks Matt.
I'm pretty sure it's the actual hard drive that's died - diagnostics says "can't find hard drive" or words to that effect.

Having looked online,  I wonder if it's possible to recover some of the data using data recovery software.  If the drive doesn't work, I doubt that would be possible.

It seems to load my windows home screen together with all my shortcuts etc. but when I try to reset the time and date (it's gone back to April 2012 !!), the little wheel just goes round and round and nothing happens……….

Your ideas would be greatly appreciated therefore …………………. :cheers

Sorry to hear of your problem Peter. If it is your hdd that's died, you have no backup and there's stuff on there that you really don't want to lose, your best bet is to use a professional service to recover what they can. This happened to my youngest son and it cost him somewhere around A$900.00 to have it retrieved. I took a lesson from said sons experience and bought an SSD and now backup all the time. There are fora that you can join and get good advice from members. I joined one for macs and have had some really helpful… well help.

Hope you get it sorted out.

Cheers Pete.
