Mobile Shunting Puzzle Plank

Hi All.   My four foot by Fourteen inch plank is designed for easy?? Manouverability , but, up until today, I had not fitted the lid stay. And after a lot of faffing around, I am still trying to fit one . As there is not a lot of room to fit it , the lid doesn’t want to fully close as the “ hinge part” gets in the way. Has anyone got experience ?? and would you please advise me?  Best wishes. Kevin

Hi Jeff.   Thank you for your reply.  Me and pixels? I can take the photos okay, but, as much as I try I haven’t been able to reduce the size of the photos for publication on “ YMRC “ . But the supports are standard.Best wishes.  Kevin

Kevin, use a program like Fast Stone which when in Edit mod allows you to do many things with a photo including reducing size
FastStone Image Viewer, Screen Capture, Photo Resizer ...      for Image Viewer   or  Photo Resizer     both are free.

Hi Kevin,

I seem to recall that you use both a tablet and also a laptop. Assuming your laptop runs Windows, just open the photo for resizing in the 'Paint' programme (right click over the photo and select 'Paint' from the 'open with' drop down menu) and you can then resize it to 700 or 800 pixels wide, then re-save it on you laptop for use on the forum.

It really is very easy, but let me know if you need a step by step guide.

Bill

At 6'4'', Bill is a tall chap, then again, when horizontal he is rather long and people often used to trip over him! . . . and so a nickname was born :)

Without a picture Kevin its difficult to help, but, are you fitting it to the right side ? Stays are quite often left handed or right handed and wont work properly fitted to the wrong side. If you still have the packaging see if it tells you

Hi Bill.  Thank you for your reply.  You are correct my HP laptop does run windows, “ when it runs “ but ont the previous occasion that I switched it on, it wouldn’t  work WiFi. ( This problem has been attributed to the installation of Windows 10 ??? ) even though it was connected by Ethernet cable. A mate of mine got it to work, without dismantling it, just by pressing a few buttons, but he is sold on the Mac system, and wants me to go the same route , but me? I would rather spend my money on model railways .  Best wishes.  Kevin

Hi Matt. Thank you for your reply. I haven’t got the packaging, that went ages ago .The stays that I purchased are a pair, and me being tight I am using the R/Hand one for the lid( my case has two lids, the topside for the layout), and I am using the L/ Hand for the base. The problem , I think stems from the lack of depth in the lid, I may have to knock up a new one? As for a photo, my iPad really does take clear photos, but me being a computer Neanderthal , I struggle with changing settings. Best wishes. Kevin

Hi Matt  , Max. I wanted to keep the pair in order? But I didn’t expect the screen to be swamped. I will sort out a Loco to pose for my next attempt?    Best wishes  Kevin   PS how do you print upside down? I would like to assist YMRC Members in the Antipodes, to save them from having to “ stand on their heads “ when reading my threads.

Hi Matt. My plans have hit a stumbling block, I am not an “Artist” I used to be one until I packed up the demon drink? But seriously the artwork on the backboard of my Shunting Puzzle was going to be creative, until I went into a local art shop today I had asked for some acrylic gesso, when she told me the price, I said “. I don’t want to buy the shop” and departed. Have you painted a backboard for your layout ? I entered Gesso in the Search on YMRC to no avail.Pease advise. Best wishes. Kevin

Hi Kevin, I just sealed my boards with white emulsion, let it dry thoroughly and then went over with various colours, but that's cos I'm a cheapscate at heart, Also becouse  SWMBO has a standing threat to remove bodily parts if I get too close to her Art supplies   You can get a 250 ml gesso from hobbycraft for £4 if they have it in stock. Thier next cheapest is about £7
Cheers

Matt            (Yup still lurking but under the cosh with work a long overdue garden clearance  )

Hi Matt. Thank you for your reply. On Wednesday evening I googled Gesso and found a local supplier in Lewisham called TheWorks, yesterday I went there and purchased 500ml for £5.00 , I haven’t opened yet and I have no idea how good it is because it would be my first time. I prefer to call myself economic?I have been so busy with the Apple store in Regent Street “a complete waste of space” I should have stuck with windows . I am off to Aylesbury tomorrow , where I intend to be economic. Best wishes. Kevin

Hi Matt  I slapped on the first coat of gesso today,I thought that I given a good stir? Whether I had or not is anyone’s guess. But, it really is thick, next sand it and dust it, then start again. The moral of this tale? I should have followed your lead.   Best wishes. Kevin
