Mainline as part of puzzle ?
Hi All I have been faffing around with an Inglenook puzzle, as everyone knows, due to lack of space. But, it occurs to me that although it is a good puzzle, I don’t know where the idea would fit in with a real Railway, as it shares the mainline as part of the game. Meaning that no other trains could run during passenger operations. If it was a sidings off the mainline it would make more sense. Best wishes Kevin PS I must have made a typo with regards to “ Instead “Last edit: by Passed Driver

There are plenty of real examples of ingenious inglenook ladders going into a main line. And that involved shunting on the main. Check the web for track plans. The basis was Kilham sidings on the Alnwick and Cornhill Railway. Branchline shunting usually involved use of the main track. Technically slip coach repositioning was shunting. Much less reality for time savers, which have received considerable criticism over the years.
Do what works for you.

Have a search around the Interweb for "Inkerman Street"
Its 7mm but covers a passenger station and a few sidings for shunting set into a scenic environment.
You don't have to copy it but its an intersting idea to start with.

A veritable treasure trove of ingenious inglenooks large and small. Real world ones had more tracks than the puzzle. Almost fractal.
