wiring
I have got a few of these old Hornby Dublo/Triang signals. I am reasonably happy about how to wire them up but I am unsure of the power source. Does anyone know whether they should be wired to the 16v AC output from a controller or whether they need to be powered by 12v DC. I am thinking of upgrading a couple but I don't want to burn them out when I test them.Any help would be gratefully received. Here is what i am talking about:

Looking at the old catalogues, they used a pasing contact switch R044 to supply a pulse of power for point motors or semaphore signals.

I agree, in that if left powered up they would most likely burn out but as you suggest a passing contact switch should solve that. It is the power source itself I am unsure of and what I was thinking of is an old phone charger with a passing contact switch in the circuit. If Owen is correct and they should be 12v, then I think the normal 16v AC outlet would be too much for the solenoids - but I don't really know  I am hoping someone on the forum still has some of these in operation.
