When space is tight

Hi All.    Modern housing with limited space for model railways calls for modules and Inglenooks. My Inglenook has now acquired a fiddleyard beyond a scenic break. But, my attempts to fit the portal / portals in the available space by scratch building don’t look as they should be, furthmore I have learned, true or false, that even if a railway line was built as a single line the tunnels had to be built as if it was a double track. If there is any Modeller with some useful scratch building skills ? Or maybe I will have to go for “ off the peg “ would you please advise me, but I would rather scratch build , within reason. Wishing everyone a Happy New Year best wishes Kevin

Hi Kevin,

Many congratulations on your enlarged layout, it sounds far more useable and enjoyable.

You just need to stop worrying about complying to whatever you see on Youtube! It simply doesn't matter. Remember that's it's your railway and nobody else's, so build whatever you like and fits your space.

Go on, just do it and continue enjoying yourself.

Best,

Bill

At 6'4'', Bill is a tall chap, then again, when horizontal he is rather long and people often used to trip over him! . . . and so a nickname was born :)

I agree. Use things you like as reference maybe but experiment and do what looks good for you. Things can always be changed/modifies later!
Get some photos of it on here so we can see it!

Hi Bill. Thank you for your reply. Too true, but it is easy to get swayed by the opinions of others. It just looked a bit flat?   Best wishes Kevin

Hi Chris. Thank you for your reply.  I have a couple of photos in the gallery, look under my title to see them  , not splendid I admit, but where I have been faffing around??? they are my best on offer, working as I do, on my project I have been too busy playing trains getting the auto Coupling to work, and too busy to do the scenery .  Best wishes Kevin

I’ve seen those ones. What I meant was I’d love to see work that you’ve done on your scenery and photos of you running stuff

Hi Chris. Thank you again. The scenery is yet to be done, just the minimum of ballast to hold the track in place. The only thing I have as far as scenery is concerned is a couple of water cranes. As for the rolling stock, think of Dapol wagons, and Bachmann Locos, plus EMU’s and DEMU’s.   Best wishes Kevin

Hi Kevin,

OWT. Plenty of secondary  lines with single portals. It all depends whether the bill to approve the line specified double, single with double to be built later, or single. There are examples of doubles singled such as the Cathedrals line) doubles with only one  built (such as the BCDR) and singles doubled with a new tunnel.

Noch OO/HO 58051 is a narrow single oval portal in stone, as is the Hornby Scaledale OO single tunnel portal in brick. R.8510. No need for scratching around.

Now if you could find an old Airfix Sherwood or Lego Castle kit….

H Nigel. Thank you for your reply. It is all down to lack of space due to the need for a stowable Layout. And the folding “ scenic break / background support “ ready for when/ if the scenery gets created. A low relief station, for the branch line? painted background , goods shed? Or whatever comes up? Best wishes Kevin

Hi Chris. Thank you. I haven’t got a video camera, but, I have been considering buying an attachment to fit my iPad onto my tripod ( as soon as I get some scenery?) then I will be able to take a “ steady video “,  I have a long shopping list and that isn’t at the top of the list.Best wishes Kevin
