It has been a while since I posted anything here, so much has happened and time seems to be running away. This doesn't mean that I have been idle in fact quite the opposite. I have recently made a decision to build a new version of my first exhibition layout 'Greetham' and want to move it to a more modern time. The layout and the majority of the models and rolling stock will be hand crafted. The one thing I have always liked to watch is container traffic and that is most probably due to the mixture of graphics and colours of the freight. The problem is that since I ceased screen printing decals there are no Australian based containers to purchase in N Scale and this set me on a path to come up with a suitable alternative. The result was better than I expected and I decided to make these as kits for sale to other Aussie modellers. The models are a card box that is then faced with the printed and ribbed design creating a true textured surface. The first model made usually takes a bit of effort but once you get the hang of it you can build two models in about twenty minutes. I have been knocking a few out for Greetham 2.0 and now need make a lot of container wagons for them.

Could you show some photos of one under construction, please? I am guessing the technique may be adapted to work with HO and OO scales too. In the meantime, I have a few old style containers (in OO) from C=Rail to paint and decorate. One can never have enough containers!

The card I supply in the kit is partially cut through to make it easy to cut the pieces which are glued together to form the box. You then simply cut out and glue the ribbed faces on the model. They are quite strong once completed and because I clear coat the graphics they are easily weathered

I could probably do these in OO but I would need to make a new press for the ribbing. British or European containers in N gauge would be easy enough, It is pointless doing them in HO as we have a number of manufacturers having them made in China.

I was thinking in terms of trying to make some myself, although the 3D ribbing might be a challenge.
