Sounds like a brilliant idea. I suppose we (older types) have all tried one of his designs in our early days. Mine was the little wooden station, unfortunately no longer in existence. I suppose I could have another go.
On the subject of Ahern's designs, any idea if anyone sells those listed in the back of his book? I can't track them down.

I entered into correspondence with them, and asked from whence they derived to copyright, as I was, at the time, in touch with Ahern's family, and they knew nothing of them. I received no response to my further correspondence.

Very interesting Doug, but is that the actual drawing from his book or just a close copy ? I know the book did provide a warehouse drawing but I've lost my copy so can't compare.

 Thank you Doug, all I need now is a source for the plans (not, I think, Ahern's) that were listed in the old Skinley catalogues. I have a couple for future use.

I have managed to collect most of the drawings by John Ahern with the exception of 1) the small station or halt; (2) timber built water mill; (3) modern brick and tile villa.  They no longer appear to be available commercially, so unless someone has them tucked away in their loft, they are probably lost forever.

Update on cottage - small chimney has been fitted.  Just need to apply flashing around both chimneys.  Picture to follow soon.

That's  not the drawing from the back of the book, but he was adept at altering  real buildings to make them more interesting, like his play on the  Harbour Office.

I always find MRJ too technical for me (my fault, it's a brilliant magazine) but this is one of the few copies I bought and kept, along with one about Iliffe-Stokes models.

The article above by David Kitchener deserves to be treated with a little caution,for example, he asserts that the 'Harbour Office' at Poole is based on the Customs House. Having visited the location, I am content to belive it was based on the 'Harbour Office', a nearby building, and oft mis-attributed.

The Old Customs House, the Harbour Office clearly alongside. The very awkward windows added by JA added considerably to my efforts to produce a model that matches his drawings to the best of my abilities, see

Only by rubbing a scalpel blade down to half-thickness could I manage to cut out the upper window frames in silk-finish photo-paper before dampening them and splitting them into half thickness to be stuck to the perspex [CD Case] with MEK.

'Summat' in my experience could mean anything from washing the dishes to retiling the roof.

Very dodgy word is 'summat'

I like the idea of reproducing every building in the book.  What a fantastic group project?

My contribution so far is the lighthouse on page 145 and I am currently building the timber-framed cottage on page 149, just above the harbour office which I know Doug has completed.
