I admit to having no knowledge of windmills nor how they work and I must admit to being rather surprised at the variety of designs and construction techniques that were used. Nigel (the man who asked to produce the model) sent me a number of photos from which I was supposed to be able to build a model. The first one was OK to a point but there were no sails nor any other details that were of much help.


A few other photos arrived and one which I did find helpful was his one from a postcard.



This photo became the benchmark and will be used as a guide in this tutorial. I searched the internet and was amazed to find a booklet that contained a wealth of information on windmills throughout Europe. The best thing was learning that the windmill at Pozieres was a French Tower Mill and on one page I found drawings on the construction of the sails. All this information was vital in trying to build a model that was a good representation of the original.





The next thing was to decide on a method of construction that would e able to withstand transport to Pozieres. As you can imagine the difficulty was to come up with dimensions for something that no longer exists and there were no plans or drawings available. Most of these tower mills varied greatly so this model would be based on a fair guess.

I will start the breakdown of the construction in the next installment.

Hi Nigel, you are most probably correct, the photo is actually the cover of the booklet that I downloaded to get information about windmills. The book covers a lot of data on windmills and was a big help in getting the model close to right. The postcard from Pozieres is the one I used to build the model.
