Scratch built loco

Hi everyone.
My friend Colin, who I may have mentioned in other threads, has an exquisite N gauge layout, which he keeps under a bushel :)
He wanted one of the Churchward/Collett Mogul 2-6-0's, but none were available, either RTR or as a kit.






so he made a boiler:



added a body:



a few bits and pieces on a cut down prairie chassis:



 added a tender:




and after painting ended up with this:




Rather nice work I thought, and worth sharing…

Regarding 3mm - we've washed our hands of that scale/gauge - three layouts were quite enough  :roll:!!
Moved on to 7mm Narrow, but it's not settling too well, so we are working on an extension to 'Teifi Gorge' our old favourite - still going strong and doing the local shows.
As for 'proper rail company'….

Sorry to hear you've kicked 3mm into touch Shaun - to me, it was a brilliant scale straddling the two larger scales perfectly - at least, it was in the good old days of Triang TT.  Small enough to get plenty of "miles" into a reasonably sized room and not in the same price bracket as 7mm.

If it still existed in RTR, I'd certainly have been there.

Was it the difficulty of having to make literally everything that turned it sour or simply the desire for a change ?

No, didn't turn sour - I think we just wanted to try other scales. Colin has always been an N guage fan, Pat collects and builds all gauges (even Hornby 3 rail, as well as tin-plate. Before he retired from their restaurant he had a working tin-plate layout in the dining room)
Me - I'm more interested in scenery and buildings. Our three 3mm layouts are still operational, and we keep them on permanent display in our Cardi-Bach museum.
Still lots of RTR 3mm stuff around, and our ChufferDuffer friend up in the hills has two huge 3mm layouts that we help with, so it's not dead!
