I've been plodding away at the Scalescenes low relief high street shops in what spare time I've managed to find over the last couple of weeks.

I know my skills are nowhere near the standard of "others", and I have  rather rushed bits of the kit because I'm so short of spare time just now, but nevertheless,  I've  become a big fan of John Wiffen's offerings.

Yes, they do take a long time to build if done well and no, they're not  as cheap as first seems by the time you've bought the card and printed  it all out, but they make up into incredibly strong models.

Here's some photos of part of the row almost completed.  The two larger shops - Boots and Maxmill Electrics - are glued together which has to be done before completing the "common" centre chimney stack :




There's a massive range of internal fixtures and fittings supplied with the kits plus, some printable name boards for personalising the shops.  This row is planned for "Station Parade" alongside Maxmill Town station.




I build each shop with it's own "base and pavement".  The join will be covered by a representation of the metal channel taking rain from the fall pipes to the gutter.

I also forgot to allow for internal lighting until it was too late but, as there's a whole parade of shops to build, later ones will have lights (and be slightly more carefully built !! :oops:)

Mike - they're great to build and, unless you've built a Scalescenes kit before, you simply won't believe the strength of them.

Certainly look better than the retaining wall I built recently Peter and I agree they're not as cheap as they would appear, especially when you don't have the right thickness card and end up glueing A4 sheets together.

(If I had the money I'd take out shares in UHU.)

I agree with others Peter, I think they look great, and importantly they are different to the usual Metcalf etc offerings normally seen. Your town is lucky to have a model shop still in operations :roll:. The depth that you have created with the interior detail is very effective.

I take your point about the model shop - but this one is only a "pretend" one……….

I think there's room for all sorts of card kits on a layout but, sticking to just one manufacturer is, IMHO, a mistake because they do become "generic".

Metcalf kits are certainly quick and easy to build so a row of something would look good.  The problem is, they're "too popular" so your row looks exactly like everyone else's row.  Maybe that day will come with Scalescenes but, because they take much longer to build, I think it may be some way off yet.  Also, they're much, much stronger than Metcalf kits.

The trouble with Metcalfe kits, in my opinion, is that they look just what they are… card buildings.  There is something rather 'flat' about their printed surface.

On my ones, I have started to use a 2.5 - 3mm double sided foam strip down the side of each window, then stick the curtains to that. It gives a lot of depth to the windows.

I use offcuts of the 1mm card for the same job.  As you say, it just takes the curtains back a little.  Maybe I should try something thicker - given that you hadn't noticed they were set back ………………….hmm:hmm  Too thick and I suspect they'd be in danger of disappearing into the blackness of the interior …………:roll::roll:

I think they look brilliant Peter,far better than mine and what's all this about not being as cheap as first thought.
Use cornflake packets or similar,they won't look any different,trust me.
