Without a copy of the manual or your track plan showing all connections- I think it maybe difficult to give an answer.

Hi ?

It seems as if your engine is picking up its power , from the FRONT wheel on one track ,
and the REAR wheel on the track . Therefore when the engine is straddling the insulated joiners ,
BOTH wheels are picking up the SAME polarity .ie both either positive , OR both negative.

When you push the engine forward, power is returned when the REAR wheel passes over the
insulated joiner, and both positive AND negative power are available.

Hope this might be of some help ,

 Regards Ted
