Does anyone know of a 1/76 scale lorry mounted crane in either kit or ready-to-run model form of late 50's/early 60's era, preferably the sort of thing that could have been used in the UK at that time, rather than a continental or American one? I'm not looking for the 'Wrecker' or breakdown crane type of thing, (I already have one of those) but a proper mobile lorry mounted crane.

Hi Keith,

I was looking for similar myself a while back but they are a bit limited. There maybe some more modern versions and also tractors etc but mobile cranes of that era and also a tracked excavator with a claw or similarly a rubber duck………. It's a struggle.

I am still hunting for something suitable for my scrap yard. If you come across anything interesting …….. Don't keep it to yourself. Likewise, I'll do the same.

cheers and good luck

Toto

Have a look at Langley models, they make some cracking white metal kits may have something you could use. I built the Langley models recovery truck, that sort of era with a crane on the back

Try the Airfix RAF Recovery Kit. It is still current and there is one in there along with a Queen Mary Trailer, a motorbike and a few figures. It's maybe a bit early but a lot were sold off after the war and may well have lasted well into the 60's in private hands. The crane is a Coles M7 on a Thornycroft Lorry Chassis.

They are marketed under the Airfix name still and I believe that they are part of the Hornby empire. I got mine from Antics a couple of months ago.

I already have one of the Coles yellow cranes, but am needing a lorry mounted one to go with a Pickfords Scammel low loader with transformer load. It's for an electricity substation setup I'm trying to construct as part of my lineside scenery. The Coles would not be large enough in 'real life' to lift the load, and the 19RB crane I have is tracked so couldn't have been used on the road, hence my need for some kind of lorry mounted crane. I'm sure I can recall there being Coles versions of these back in the 60's that would have been up to the job, and I haven't seen anything like this in the Langley models lists, or indeed any other model manufacturer. Having said that, Oxford do the RAF recovery set, but not looked closely at it. I'll try Antics for an Airfix kit,- I can always paint it in Pickfords colours……..artistic licence I think it's called. Toto, have you looked at the Corgi Lineside 19RB crane, could be the sort of thing a scrapyard would have used back in the 60's as they'd been around from the late 30's.

Just found the RAF recovery set on the Antics website so ordered one. Not too bothered about the "Queen Mary" trailer, but maybe I'll find an alternative use for it in time. Thanks for the help and suggestions guys, much appreciated.
