Cheers me dears,

At 6'4'', Bill is a tall chap, then again, when horizontal he is rather long and people often used to trip over him! . . . and so a nickname was born :)

Bill,

First time I've seen a tractor ploughing without the plough.

No contest, the traction engine would be around 150 hp (the old measurement) nominal, more likely 450-600 actual. That souped up diesel tractor would be approaching 1000 but with nothing like the torque (or weight/gearing).

The old HP definition was (I think) raising 33,000 lbs one foot in one minute. So 5 million pounds one foot in one minute nominal, 15 million plus actual. Hope nobody was betting on the diesel.

Hi Nigel,

Yep, the thought of a young kid on a loud and rapid souped-up tractor, actually believing that he could ever pull a heavy old steam engine with its abundance of low-down grunt, brought a smile to my face! Youngsters today eh? Don't know they're born!

As you said, the tractor did make a passable imitation of a plough though.

Bill :)
