I was passing through Banbury over the weekend, almost all the old GWR track has now gone, replaced with concrete sleepers, FB rail and modern clips.

For those who want to wire droppers to the outside or inside web there is now a prototype.

That's an interesting detail, electrical block detection?

Kind Regards

Hi Aaron,

I believe it's train detection equipment (it counts the wheels/axles apparently), the wires go to a yellow junction box under the platform edge. Essentially an  occupancy detector, as long as the axle count equals the train total it's all good. This is heavily used track (one passenger train every 5-10 minutes plus freights).

Hi Nigel.  I have just spotted this thread, and Axle counters have come a long way since the "Bent Piece of Wire" connected to a switch beside the rail.    Best wishes. Kevin

Hi Kevin,

Thanks for the information. Any idea of where there would be some pictures?

Hi Nigel.  In an old Ian Allan publication "British Railways Signalling " 2nd edition 1968, they have a description , unfortunately but no photos of a "Treadle". I am certain that I have seen one somewhere. I only purchased this book to make a model of an O gauge "Summersault Signal".  Best wishes. Kevin

Hi Kevin,

Plenty on the web, used for all sorts of things from train occupancy to speed determination. " Treadle + Railway".

Hi Nigel  I just looked at "Teadle + Railway", that looks very similar to the photo that I saw.   Kevin
