My 1st 3 layouts probably cost no more than say $2-3000 each, i had lots to learn and they eventually fell by the wayside as i learnt more about layouts.
The last one i done was awsome and it cost me about $20,000 (i don't have kids) :D so i can spend it on myself (luckily)

This new layout i am starting i expect to cost me about $25,000 + i believe it is not a waste as i am about to embark on another adventure in building a layout again, after all….  you could spend the same on a second car …hey :wink:

I realise most married guys could not do what i am doing But i am interested to know if you guys realise what you have already spent on your layouts over the years. :?:
You may be in for a Big Surprise when you add it all up :shock: NOTE….don't tell your wives the price :P

Tell me whether you have had many layouts or had just the one, has you hobby lost you money in "stuffing" things up and causing damage ie….changing your mind and having ballasted all that track having to throw it out :shock:   and so on

So am I and the wife knows how much I spend on the layout any way as she comes with me to the model shop  :) but I tend to do it as cheaply as possible

The old Wenchoster Railways was built on the cheap with almost everything being bought on eBay or scrounged/recycled.  

The new layout is a different affair.  Rather than rush and cut corners I am pacing the building and the cost - going for quality rather than speed and quantity.  The benchwork is "properly constructed". All track is brand new, and the DCC kit and wiring have pushed up the cost.  I know it will be worth it in the long term :wink:

I'm not including the cost of the three or four DCC locos and rolling stock that my wife bought for me.  :twisted:  :wink:    

Also, I'm recycling a load of stuff bought over 20 years ago, when things were a fair bit cheaper.  8)

I'm in the more popular second category with most money being spent on controller, baseboards and track. In the main I have got rolling stock off ebay or as presents - mind you I have  hell of a long way to go yet.

My wife is very supportive but does wonder how much I'm spending at times. For instance all my stuff comes via mailorder which means I have to collect it from the local post office and she often comes down to the village with me, erego I can hide nothing. When I tell her that I'm expecting a little switch and a parcel about two feet square arrives she starts to get suspicious. Ah well. :oops:  :oops:  :oops:

Just tell her the switch was well packaged, but you can use the packaging for building scenery, thereby saving even more money that logically you can then spend on the layout.

At least, I think that's how female logic works!  :roll:

this has worked out very expensive :evil:  however on a lighter note, now i have most things i will recycle all the track etc. I intend to build another layout in about 2 years when we move. So it will be money well spent.
This is just a roundabout price for each point

Accessorie decoder (hornby) 6.00 per point

I have 24 0f these and I brought these new. Like I said before these will be used on my next layout.

Hi ya :D I am with Tim and his attitude, my last layout and this one i am building is based on quaility and taking my time having learned from past mistakes :twisted:
In the past i was in a hurry and also bought anything that even resembled a train and particularly if it was cheap :roll: The 1st 3 layouts were just a mish mash of whatever.
This time i am buying the major brands only and will take my time :D
After 7 years tho i am a bit shocked at the prices i now have to pay :shock: Just one Loco can now cost $1200 over here, if it is set up for smoke,sound,Zimo etc Average cost for other loco's seem to be around $600.
I had Zimo DCC on the last layout and fell in love with it, so i have no choice but to use it again :P

I have also noticed when at the train shop that the average age of the modeller appears to be around around 25- 70 years old, this makes sense to me as i know i could not afford to do it when i was 20 myself
 
Model trains are my only vice now :P I have mates who have Jet ski's and boats, suped up cars, go overseas on holidays  etc so i guess it is all relevant on where your interest lies, at least that is what i keep telling myself :wink:

Hope I won't go over the $5000 mark, which after all is over £2100, but a quick check of my gear and the thought of what I need in future, makes me wonder :!:

My wife always says she does not mind my railway as she would rather I spent money on something like this than wasting it idown the pub!  If she knew how much I had spent her view may differ - but it would be one hell of a hangover

the present one has already cost £300 track,£155 dcc unit,
£60 for kits,! to scared to go on. :shock:  :shock:

Sorry to sound dumb.

But do I include ALL the rolling stock or just the items that constitute the layout.

The reason being I have a wee bit of a OO model railway/model vehicle collection.

Everything technically could be placed or run on the layout currently under construction.
