I'm not sure the article is completely correct in its conclusions.
The important thing is that a creator will normally be able to prove ownership by original camera files and the like.
Thus, the few that would take copyright action will still be able to do so.
The onus on taking up searches is helpful in that it means that those searching are aware that the image isn't their property.

Of course, I may be talking through my hat.

The problem with proving ownership by way of the camera files (presumably you refer to the EXIF data embedded in the original camera file) many photo processing applications strip the EXIF data, so if for example you have cropped the photo then you have very little chance of proving that it is yours unless you have added a copyright notice or watermark, which many people don't bother with, a copyright notice can be cropped or cloned out unless it is right across the middle of the pic, in which case it can look awful.

One way to make your on line pic less attractive to the robbers is to keep it small, 600 pixels on longest side is good 800 is on the edge.

Also watch out for the small print on hosting sites, many of them include a clause saying in effect "by posting on our site you give us permission to sell it to who we like and you get nowt" usually hidden in legal gobbledegook, but that's what it means.

It's not only photos that are at risk but music, authors works and other "intellectual property"

The Register article linked to by ddolfelin is mostly correct, they do tend to sensationalise a bit but the message is clear.

So the way I read it, and I may be wrong (again), is that if you don't
register your property on this new register, which costs you money and time,
you won't have a leg to stand on.

I'm glad I don't post any pics, etc which are worth anything

Stuffed by the UK Government Again, typical
