Anyone know who John Polley is?

I wasn't really sure where to putthis video so hopefully it's ok here. If not feel free to move it around a bit.

Anyway, has anyone seen this one or is it old news which has only just found its way to Wiltshire? Maybe 'we' know this man? Either way it looks like a great layout and I'm sure I've heard that "Mind the gap" announcement somewhere on this forum before ;-)

Abbey Road is doing the rounds on the exhibition circuit down this end . allways draws a crowd . I think it has had  the best layout in the show award a few times.  :thumbs  If i can find out more in an old programme, about the owner i will post it on here.

I think Abbey Road was featured in one of the modelling mags recently.

Whatever, it looks like a good layout but, having had the tube stock hand made in Sri Lanka, I shudder to think what it might have cost.

Thanks for that guys, much appreciated. I did think about building an underground beneath (obviously) my layout but didn't think it would really look right if I'm basing mine on the Western Region unless I pretended it was Paddington of course. Plus I've hardly done anything on the overground so I hate to think what little progress I would make to an underground!

If you kept all the underground hidden, you could say you've already completed it…

I did think about that, maybe just have signs in the station, a down escalator and an annoying 'Mind the Gap' announcement every 30 seconds. Yep, that would work!

Abbey Road is a fascinating layout. I have seen it a couple of times. John Polley converted the EFE stock that I ran on the Underground Module at our show. I spoke to him several times and shared a couple of ideas. He seems a very helpful person.

In regard to Mind the Gap, I learnt that it did not occur as an announcement until the early 70s. However I can let you have a "Mind the Doors" recording if you wish :pedal

Geoff ,i seem to remember station staff ,porters i suppose ,shouting mind the gap ,that was at stations where the platform is on a curve .  This would have been mid 1950's  up until i stopped using the underground about 1966 or so.Perhaps later it was an automated announcement to satisfy elf and safety.  :???:

I first saw Abbey road at Doncaster last year. A month later it was at Jarrow show where I was also showing Potters lane so John Pooley and myself compared notes on making buildings with foamex. I think it was also featured in hornby mag a couple of months back. ;-)

In regard to Mind the Gap, I learnt that it did not occur as an announcement until the early 70s.

Phased in across safety-critical locations from the mid 70's I believe and at a time when passenger numbers were in sharp decline meaning platform staff were being removed in droves to save money.

It has subsequently become more or less universal.

The previous iteration was often more like "Minotaurs" or "Minor Tors", called out by as many staff as were assembled at the time and in as many Imperial Accents as you can imagine.

I think my record was encountering TEN platform staff at sleepy Lambeth North one Sunday afternoon.  The function of all seemed to be no more than to make these announcements, smoke (it was permitted on the tube then, though not among on-duty staff) and discuss the previous evening's reverie in a thick Jamaican patois.

Abbey Road? - class stuff.  Never knowingly had the pleasure of meeting its owner.
