I have a hornby 0-4-0ST Class OF locomotive which I bought secondhand she runs really well but I have noticed she is noisy when running. Can anyone suggest why the loco is noisy. I have never dismantled a loco but if I need to to help find the problem that's fine. :???:

Noise - whining or grinding? Worn gears or dry gears probably. Try some appropriate grease, if still noisy they're worn. The diagram should be like this Support :: Hornby Hobbies

By the look of things decidedly user unfriendly. Looks like you pull the buffers off, remove the body shell, remove the cover to the motor, remove the motor, squirt grease on the gear train, replace motor, bit of grease on the worm, reverse steps. Or remove the bottom plate, squirt grease on axle gear. Going from the underneath means pretty much removing everything, although if you work upside down and don't disturb the wheels and rods it should be OK. Watch the electrical pick-ups when reassembling.

If it is the old Dapol-based 'Pug', then the gear noise is built in. The same applies to the Hornby (ex-Dapol) J94 and Terrier. At speed they sound like a swarm of angry hornets. You may be able to quieten them a bit, but not completely, short of giving them a completely different chassis and gear train.

Hi Jeff thanks for explaining this to me and yes its the old hornby pug that does sound like a swarm of wasps. :)

I wasn't thinking that old. Toothpaste or gear polishing paste sometimes helps, which would mean a complete strip down. Just live with it, or start building your own chassis.

Hi Nigel I would not know where to start building my own chassis, so I might just live with the little bit noise the loco makes.

I used to have a video of a layout where all the locos had been dubbed with the sound of a very noisy growling mech', it was incredibly annoying, what the film maker had been thinking I don't know, but I would liked to have shaken him firmly by the throat!!

Now imagine that sound amplified by 10, and it still playing when the loco has stopped!!!!!!!!!!!!
