Triang. Clerestory Conversion

Hi All.  I have three Triang Clerestory Coaches for conversion . But I have been sitting on my hands, numb fingers:lol: But today I received the latest DOGA journal, which featured a Triang Clerestory conversion , to a GCR non corridor stock, but, I do BR ( S ) or Southern etc. But this gives me some hope . The next thing I need to do is get hold of a roof or three and ventilators. Has anyone got any ideas please. Best wishes.Kevin

Dart Castings do a lot of different roof vents for various companies and periods Kevin. As for roofs, well you need more clerestory stock, the rougher the better, aka cheap!

Hi Bill.    Thank you . I am dreaming again? I will get around to it, because I was inspired by someone else’s work. I should finish one job at a time, the fiddleyard , the garden clear up seems endless, the household chores, you name it , the jobs are piling up. I must find the time to get to more model railway exhibitions . Best wishes. Kevin

Hi Kevin.

Might be able to help with a roof or two. Have some knocking around somewhere. Will let you know when I find them. Got a couple of rough bodies too.

I'm old, that's why I'm allowed to change my mind, when I can find it.

Have found three coaches altogether but no bogies. If you want them let me know. You can have them for the postage. PM me if interested.

Hi Bill.  This is a second reply.  Did you rind it Useful to have a scrap piece of hardboard in the bottom of the mitre box?   I knew a bishop that found it useful.  Best wishes. Kevin

Absolutely not Kevin, as it makes for an inaccurate cut, which is the very thing you need to avoid when chopping coach sides, as a second chance can be expensive! Hardboard is rarely flat, so will interfere with the cut. Don't do it.

Always minimise risks to both safety and ruining the workpiece. I covered this early on in my Clifton Downs project, shortly to be taken up again.

Cheers,

Bill

Hi Bill.   Thank you. It was just an idea to prevent blunting the blade.  Kevin

Glad you've found your razor saw Kevin, so no stopping you now eh? The blades last a long time with care, but I also have a spare for the size most often used.

Hi Kevin,
Those old Triang bodies are made from thick plastic, tough going with a small modeling saw. The Ratio bodies are much thinner. If you can find a piece of wood that is a tight fit inside the body and tape it in place the cuts will be straighter and cleaner. Mark very carefully, cut oversize and file to the line rather than try and cut exactly to the line.

Hi Nigel. Thank you for your reply.  That is an excellent idea. Looking at my new “ Excel #55665 mitre box “ I noticed that it was shallow, I don’t know if you are familiar with this brand? Apart from my concerns , it looks very good.      Best wishes. Kevin

I'm at an airport in Northern France at the mo Kevin, so just a rapid response. I do not model SR, so am unaware of bogie types, or indeed, what you are modeling, so cannot advise, except try searching 'shapewsys SR bogies' and see what turns up.
You might also try 247 Developments, who manufacture white metal bogies for most major railways.

Happy searching,

Bill

Hi Kevin,

Most modeling mitres boxes are too shallow for anything but flat pieces or tubes and rods (or N-scale bodies). You will almost certainly need to eyeball the cut and follow the line for part of the way.

I will be doing a cut and shut of a Bachmann On30 passenger car next week, much too big for my mitre box, and thick plastic, which will bind the fine saws. I will post the bash.

Really?

Either they do them, or they don't. I know how easy it is to find GWR , bogies on the site.
You still need to fit bearings and wheel sets, but they come fully built, unlike white metal types.

Hi Kevin,

Hattons  have Bachmann Bulleid bogies if that  is what you are looking for. Torpedo or shell ventilators were pretty similar across the different railways. Try Wizard Models.
