Hornby 3F Jinty - Smokebox being cleaned

So, after lots of discussion with myself, I decided to have a diorama of a loco being cleaned in the loco service area and to make it more realistic, I would have the smokebox door open. This required me to research what the inside looked like, and after lots of help on RMWeb, I decided to take the plunge.
The doner was a Hornby 3F Jinty (16440) which was maroon, no longer working and definately cheap enough to wreck without loosing a tear!!
Well, after making the first incision, it was too late to turn back. What was once a tidy little red 3F Jinty, has now turned into a black mess, a shadow of its former self!! Progress so far;
Hacked off smokebox door, scratchbuilt the boiler tube plate & smoke tube, re-painted the model black, weathered the inside of the smokebox, replaced the rectangle handrails on the doors for brass tubing, replaced the side handrails, fitted handrails and step to the front of the tank, replaced the coal bunker rails with scratchbuilt ones and added real coal, painted the interior of the cab, re-crafted the clack valve

and added a few pipes, new Alan Gibson buffers and fitted vacuum pipes.

No laughing please…… this was my first locomotive re-modelling project and my first time re-painting a loco.

Since photo was taken I have scratchbuilt the brake rodding and added the screw couplings. I have yet to add in the plate at the rear of the coal bunker (forgot to do it when I put in the coal), and re-number/logo the loco using Pressfix (first time using the decals) decals. Smokebox door number will be a challenge mind!! Once all that is done, I will fit the scratchbuilt smokebox door and Springside fire-irons/lamps/tools I have just ordered plus add the cleaning men hard at work after I have weathered the whole loco.

Hope you enjoy my first attempt!!! more photo's to follow.

That looks the part, Ian.

Somewhere there is a "Corporate" video on YouTube, where we are taken through the whole process.

Here are the latest pics after adding the the last few touches. Last  things to remain are shed crew cleaning the outside and a few tools. I  re-numbered the loco using Pressfix. Overall I am happy with the result  and hopefully it will finish of the scene quite well.

And the original model:

Hi Ian,

I only just noticed those middle driving wheels.

The shed cleaner would probably have a pipe cleaning rod to hand as well. Piece of rod with a rag on the end.

I watched the video and gave me some great ideas. I have a set of tools on order and will make sure he has a rod at hand and a hose nearby. Great video!!!!!

Wonderful film Max.  :thumbs

Having to do that lot every 2 weeks or so does tend to highlight some of the advantages of smelly diesels ……………servicing kettles must have cost a fortune.

A brilliant cameo Ian - some great ideas about what to do with a "dead" loco.   :thumbs :thumbs

Where you show them throwing the ash on the floor it was actually more common to shovel it into a wheelbarrow, as they would only have to dig it up again, off the floor to take it to their ash dump /  Ash collection wagon.

Now I've finally started a model railway…I've inherited another…
