My only reservation would be that there have been other publications in the past that, once they have built up a readership,  become subscription only.

I get this link from Locoyard, which is UK Heritage Hub and Model Railway Blog. Locoyard have some good stories and links to other railway related topics, such as the preservation scene, particular trains etc. I receive emails just about everyday, if not atleast every 2nd day.
