Today my mate Jimmy and i went to Petworth station and took some pics, which i would like to share with you.

The line opened in 1866 and carried freight and passengers right up until 1955 when it shut down the passenger side but kept the freight going till 1963 when it shut all together. It used to be a single line, serving Pulbourgh to Midhurst. There was a loop on the other side of Petworth for trains to pass.

In the summer we are going to walk it from Pulbourgh to Midhurst and see what we can find.

Here are the pics, loads so you are warned,

Tunnel first, facing towards Midhurts, pics of the tunnel and walls. Also showing the support wall on the outside, just look at the cracks. This bridge has heavy lorry's going over it every day as well, :shock:,



We found these inside the tunnel, thought we would have them but thought better not,












Looking at the tunnel from the track alongside the station,



Next the station, this is the rear,










along the platform towards the tunnel,




Next the Pulman cars and various things like the wheels, buffers etc etc,




























The railway workers cottage's just a stone throw from the station,







Next the front of the station, my car got in the pic due to me forgetting to move it :oops:, still aint she nice :thumbs,












Well that's it for now, have more but i think this will do for now. Oh the main one in fron of the station with my car is a tad blue, i uploaded th wong one sorry, .

Good pictures Phill, easy to see you are getting the camera sorted out. I can use a lot of those for detail and weathering. Well done.

I love those matchboard sided Pullmans - don't suppose you got one of the makers plate showing when they were built ?

To bwe honest i did not see any, maybe they where taken off, the ones on the right are being refitted, so could be off due to this

Nice set of pics Phill - I last visited the site about thirty years ago and the station although intact was derelict then so its great to see that it has been restored and has a new use.

What is the station used for now?  A Restaurant?

If it was derelict 30 years ago as Richard says then someone has spent a lot of money on it so it must have some commercial use.

I think I remember reading it was going to be turned into an up market restaurant/hotel  and that the pullmans were going to be used for accomodation but looking at the state of the coaches that may have changed in the intervening years.

No it is indeed a B&B. Very impressive inside the Hotel come old station. The Pulmans are the accomadation, see this link,

You can stay either in one of the rooms at the station or in a pullman. The web page shws the conversion inside the Pulman and the station.

The same day I visited Petworth all those years ago I remember I was trying to trace the route through to Midhurst and Petersfield . There was another station on the line that was also intact but completely buried in undergrowth - not sure where but I think it may have been Fittleworth .Would be interesting to know if that also survived if you are exploring.

Indeed Fittleworth is still there and now restored by private owners.
