I am currently researching my village, railway wise. Yes Lancing may be known as a town to many but actually it is recorded as the biggest village in England.

I am also researching the Midhurst to Pulbourgh line, long since closed and ripped up but thats another story.,

Here are some pics of the past and present station in Lancing, scroll down and its the last 2 pics, in 1925 the signal box is on the left next to the platform but today it is situated on the other side of the crossing and sits on its own,

 I am afraid the majority of my books related to works and sheds are out on loan till the summer with  a mate researching for a model he is planning.

Perhaps members could check their railway libraries for suitable sources for images of the carriage works.

Phill I found a plan of the works and a track plan on line of the carriage works at:

Its an article written as part of a GCSE history course in the              1980's

I'll see what I can do about Midhurst.  But the track plans will certainly be in one of the books quoted by Chris.

Try your local library for a copy of Chris's suggestion.  They might be even able to order them for you if not on a library shelf in the county.  If you have a current membership card you should be able to access the county wide libraries index and ordering service.

I have checked Cornwall library service this morning and I can order either the Plymouth and Bodmin books produced by the same publisher.

Thanks guys off to the library then it is. I just love all this history on railways. I since found out that Lancing was one of the first major cuts by that nice man Mr Beeching, do you know of him, :roll::thud.

You might also recall, Phill, the sad end which befell the former Lancing Carriage Works.  Converted to industrial use they stood curving away from the main line to the south still very distinctive in their architecture.

Until one day the place burned down end to end.  The roof fell in and I believe the walls were condemned due to heat damage.

§ 28. Mr. DAY      asked the Minister of Health whether he has received complaints regarding the emission of injurious fumes, smoke, and dust from the Southern Railway Company's carriage works at Lancing, Sussex; and what steps his Department are taking to prevent this nuisance to the surrounding inhabitants?


§ Mr. GREENWOOD     I have had no complaint since the reply to my hon. Friend's question of the 4th December, and the district council inform me that during recent months there has been no emission of smoke constituting a nuisance under the Public Health Act. They add that the smoke emitted is mainly from the electricity generating plant, which, it is hoped, will be superseded when power from bulk supply is available.


§ Mr. DAY        Can my right hon. Friend say when that reply was received from the district council?
