Bachmann Shay Rebuild

Hiya,

Recently finally finished the On30 Bachmann Shay locomotive. Thought id post a few photographs for you .

I stripped the model then rebuilt, resprayed and altered it to what i wanted.

I added a dress up kit from Backwoods miniatures. I also rebuilt quite a bit of the firebox, control equipment stuff. The wood is real wood just cut and split with a blunt scapel blade.

Sorry about the poor quality of the photographs, i will take some better ones when i can borrow my freinds photographic light box..

I did the basic black respray with Halfords matt black car spray. ( the matt takes paint better i have found ). All the weathering after that was done with just acrylics and small paintbrushes. I build each area up by hand using a small brush then use multiple acrylic washes and dry brushes until it is complete.

The unit on the front is a gypsy engine powered by steam from the locomotive, it was used for logging to operate the overhead winch systems and cranes. They carried either ropes or chains on them. They also used it for dragging logs along and for general winching work.

I am also going to do the same to a Climax and a Hiesler as well. I have quite an interest in geared locomotives and also hope to work on a larger Shay at some point.

Thanks for that Nikki!  What would have been called in Marine Engineering terms a 'Donkey Engine', hence the reason many  ships carried 'Donkey Men'…..
