Surfing around I thought I would check out the Severn Lamb web site. Some time since I had a look so expecting the usual leisure ride stuff I was surprised to find they are offering an ultra light weight train set. Gauges from 610mm through to standard gauge. One of the pictures is of a very modern railcar set running on what looks like 2' gauge track, or is it smaller.

It does not seem to be in the UK and is probably in some protected park. However it is not a replica of some ancient set up but a modern design. Anyone any idea where it might be.

Well a short search and I have answered my own question, with a very surprising answer, for me at least.

Seems the train runs on a short line to the Al Hoota caves near Muscat in the Sultanate of Oman. Now it happens I worked there for a couple of years at the turn of the century. Caves were not a public attraction then, in fact I cannot recall ever hearing of them. The picture on the Severn Lamb site now makes sense.

Only railway there when I was there ran at a fair ground to the north of Muscat. Well I think it did as I never saw it running. There was also a railway on Al Masirah island when it was a RAF base. Nice little book on the subject is available.

So unless anyone has travelled on it I hope is fitted with air conditioning. In Oman I once saw 50 celcius on the thermometer outside the flat, it was also in the shade. Also while waiting so someone in the car once waiting for someone I had the engine ticking over and the air conditioning on. It was an old Mk1 pajero (shogun here, montero USA and Spain). Great vehicle, superb air conditioner as the outside thermometer read 52 celcius.

By the way the Pajero is called the Montero in USA and Spain as Pajero is a rude word in Spanish. Probably why it was the Shogun in the UK. As there are a number of grey imports around, their owners not realising they are driving a Misubishi W….r, check it out in a big English Spanish dictionary.

I used to do fireworks each year from Jalali Fort over the bay from the Sultan's Palace, usually in December or January, it was hot even in mid winter …………but a nice, if short, break from the cold, damp foggy conditions in UK :cheers
