Normally, I'd have been in UK at this time of year Ron and I'd have made the effort to go.  Alas, this year, I'm stuck in France ……………

Give my regards to Paul Chetter - he's just sent me a superb sound loco - a Hornby Class 08 with one of his projects loaded.  Brilliant.

I'll post a short video when I get time to take one.

Enjoy the show.  :thumbs

Just returned from the Lincoln railshow, good turnout and some nice layouts but they suffered from the usual problem! Not enough moving trains, I watched one country terminal layout and nothing moved for 8 minutes! No wonder people drifted away!!
gave our regards to Paul Chetter who had a very nice 0 scale class 26 on 'sound' display complete with extra braking sounds!!
Few photo's;

Like this deserted old bridge!

Hi Ron

I went yesterday (Saturday) as well… good show apart from (as you've pointed out) nothing moving… plenty of operators and trains lined up in the fiddle yards, plenty of computerised track plans on show but, nothing moving 'front of house'.  I gave up on three interesting layouts where nothing moved, at all, including the operators, for five or six minutes.

One layout caught my eye… think it may have been Grime Street (apologies if not) but it had a cyclist on his bike going round the block, pedalling away… yes his legs actually moved… very realistic. My wife asked me how they managed to get a motor in such a small body? I smiled, tapped her gently on the head and suggested MkII might also have a sound chip so you could hear him grunting and panting… Very realistic chaps well done and 10/10 for innovation…

Notes to Show Manager;-
  1. Too many people early doors adorned with official neck chains… couldn't move for 'em at one stage… how many mayors and deputies has Lincoln got? From years of experience arranging exhibitions and shows… local officials opening events is so 1950…
  2. Show operating rules must include all layouts have to keep things moving - it's what the general public (not necessarily the modellers) pay to see.
  3. The free colour programme - really nice touch, as was the free parking.

Otherwise an enjoyable show and a good six squids worth…..

A shame the organisers learnt little from the 2015 show! I rather like the idea of 1950 style openings though!

Bill :)

At 6'4'', Bill is a tall chap, then again, when horizontal he is rather long and people often used to trip over him! . . . and so a nickname was born :)

They were but it just shows they haven't learnt anything ………

Grime Street is a wonderful tram layout and one the builder owner, Mark Casson, allowed me to operate a couple of years back whilst he popped off for a fag break.  He is actually a member on here - "Red Devil" and you can see some more of Grime Street here:

No, but I noted he went round the corners absolutely perpendicular without braking or slowing and didn't check behind before turning… probably been at the vino…..

Maybe we could/should encourage all show managers to insist things are kept running… its what the public pay their money for…..

Just to keep you informed… below is the reply I received from the Lincoln Show Exibition Manager (Alan Webster) to an email I sent re the show… my original paraphrased points are in red.

"Dear Mike,

Many thanks for the input of constructive criticism, in answer to them all, here goes.

Re: Layouts at a standstill for long periods.
1. This is completely beyond our control, however the layout operators  were asked to keep things moving as best as they could, but without  having to stand behind them with a cane or whip I cannot see how we can  stop the occasional lapse.

Re: My thoughts on a very large 'G' scale layout taking up too much space.
2. I agree with you to a point,  but it started as a medium sized layout when first invited, I was  surprised it had grown upon arrival. On the obverse, as I was informed  many times, the children really enjoyed it as it captured their  imagination, and lets be honest, the children are the next generation of modellers.

Re: Praise for free colour guide and free parking.
3. Thanks, we decided at the 1st exhibition the show guide was to be free.

Re: The Mayoral party getting in everyone's way.
4. The mayors party are part of the show, mainly to bring in local  awareness and hopefully publicise the event. As they were a slightly  larger party this year they were asked politely to split up and then  confere their notes. I personally didn't think they took up much more  room than some of the other visitors that were in a small bunch.

Re: Praise for the £6 entry fee.
5. Thanks, we aim to keep the admission at the same amount next year.

On a different slant, I was operating at Telford last weekend. For the  visitor it was £9.50 to gain entry plus £4.00 for parking the car, total to walk through the door £13.50 to see 14 layouts and about as many  traders.

Again many thanks for your input.

Alan Webster (exhibition manager) "
