Equivalent?

Hi all,

I've done something that I wouldn't normally do but have put the same question on RMweb. I was merrily painting sleepers with my bottle of Floquil Rail road tie brown when I knocked it over. "Oh what a silly thing to do, Peter" I said to myself as you can imagine. Anyway, I was wondering if anyone knows of a replacement enamel that's as good as Floquil and avilable in Australia.

I was looking at MIG paints the other day.  A very large range of colours, incl. those for railways.

Have a look, you might find something suitable.  These are acrylic.

Thanks, John. I had a look at the Ammo paints but ended up settling for Humbrol and Revell from a local ish store. They stock enamel which I prefer for this sort of thing, so the order goes in tomorrow.

Fair do Peter.  I haven't used MIG myself but it comes highly rated.  I have more paint than I know what to do with right now, even an old bottle of PollyS railroad tie brown.  Used it on my layout.

BTW, IIRC, PollyS acrylic was the successor to Floquil.  I think Floquil was discontinued because it contained Benzene or some such nasty chemical.  I loved PollyS but now that has been discontinued.  It was owned by Testor's, who seem to ridding themselves of modelling products.  Tamiya is still very good.  I stocked up on Humbrol acrylics (BR colours) a couple of years ago and a good thing too since Humbrol "no longer sell it".

I wondered why it was suddenly stopped. I saw that PollyS took it up, but we're talking years ago, I think. Shame about Testors too.

It seems the "elf and softy" brigade are slowly banning everything that works.  I remember trying for ages to find some Testors "Dullcote" in UK only to discover it had been withdrawn because of "nasties".  Try buying creosote in France !!!

Why have Humbrol stopped selling BR couloured acrylics ?

I can only assume that Humbrol stopped selling acrylics for business reasons but I have no idea what those might be.

Usually someone steps in to fill vacuums and there is still a lot of choice for acrylic; MIG, Tamiya, Vallejo etc.  

I don't get why the PO won't carry acrylic paint, although I sort of get why enamel is banned.

Paint and glue is still delivered by Canada Post and I have online sources for that, so not too bad.

While I was putting the world to rights about the reason for Floquil disappearing, your post reminded me that we can't get creosote here, either.  :@

News to me Peter, but looks like Hattons still have some (UK delivery only).

But your right, there's no Railmatch acrylic paints on Humbrol's website.

Testors Dullcote is still available in the UK.  One example:

I use the bottled type to paint onto Scalescenes' Buildings.  It dries rapidly.  Smells awful with lots of health warnings on the label.  Best get the wife to do it!

I'd ordered some Humbrol matt varnish among other things, then your post came up about the Testors stuff. It's sold here in Oz, but as usual most retailers make killing on the price.

Here I am again. You'll never believe it, but I've just found a bottle of Testors dull coat. I bought it so long ago from Austral Modelcraft that I'd forgotten it. It cost A$5.95. Now it's being advertised for over $20.00 + postage of course. I'll use that rather than the Humbrol matt varnish.

Facing the same problem here. I need some "Big Sky Blue" as used by the Great Northern in 1967-1970. I can pay $20 for questionable new old stock (Floquil in a rusty can or Polyscale in an impossible-to-open jar), or ~$6 for some new aerosol quality from 3 different suppliers. None of them are close to the original. So, off to the local household paint stockist, 10 minutes later I had 872mL of acrylic latex emulsion that was a much better match and cost me $9.60. Diluted with aerosol acrylic and a bit of matt medium it airbrushes fine. Vallejo is a bit of a chancy exercise when it comes to railway colors.

I spent yesterday afternoon in the local art studio with a friend who is an artist. One of her fellow artists who was there is a "mixologist". Using artist-quality water-soluble acrylic paints they soon came up with what blues I needed. I am now looking at a dozen swatches that would be suitable and using just 3 colors - 2 blues and some burnt umber (not black). These paints are about 100x more concentrated than regular acrylic paints, so a little goes a very long way. Suitable diluted with matt medium they will airbrush fine.

You say you dilute it with "aerosol acrylic" and matt medium.  My brain must be addled but what is "aerosol acrylic" other than a rattle can of acrylic paint and if it is just that, do you simply spray it into the latex acrylic for airbrush use ?

Airbrushing is something I certainly need to practice more, pareticularly when it comes to thinning paint !!

When I lived in UK, I knew a company who would mix paints to match any Pantone colour required.  Alas, in my part of France, I'm not sure they've ever heard of Pantone !!
