Have a look at this for underlay. I like the sound of it.

Not as cheap as cork roadbed, but not over the top in price as well.  A square metre would stretch a long way, depending on how many turnouts on the layout (that would use, and waste, a little more of the underlay mat.)

Does any member in the "trade"  have any experience of this product?   Chris?  John from BromsMod?

As an aside - there are some gorgeous models in the passenger coach gallery :!:

Have a look at this (it got very good reviews in the railway press a while back):-

It's also featured in Hobby's annual catalogue.

You're right there Tim. I'd have to be pretty deidicated (and rich) to pay 10 time more for say a Maunsell coach than I would for one of the new detailed Hornby versions.

Apparently it is used in the automotive industry and has proven sound deadening qualities. I remember that we used something similar when I was putting together Rover motor cars many years ago and this kind of material is indeed very good.
Having said that I have no problems with adequate bracing of the baseboard and then a thick layer of cork. I must say however that cork only works really well with the afore mentioned bracing.
