Problems With Fotopic

Just found out that Fotopic, the well known photo hosting website has gone!
Bad news!
Most of the pictures I have used in my layout thread (and others) now fail to apear in my posts.
Luckily I still have all the images on my own PC so have not lost anything.
I could use my own pwp pages to host the pictures but, I want to save space.
So, the bottom line is, anyone browsing my layout thread be warned, a lot of pictures will be missing until I find an alternitive host site.

That's bad news. Anyone heard anything about Photobucket? That would be a real killer if they go under as I have over a thousand pictures with them and it would knock our forum for six, that's for sure.

Chris T uses a fototopic site a lot of his piccys have disaperared i think quite a few sites on the net railway related had their photos on fototopic sites so in the index a lot of stuff will have gone.

It may be time to start the gallery for members Bob

I may even look at putting mine on my servers as photobucket could go down just as easily.

The problem is the space Bob i dont know how much wow give you if say 40 members use it for their photos that could become very large 50 -60 gb very easily

i may be able to do a backup for everone if they want i got unlimited space and bandwidth or plain image storage if they want

Storing ones own photographs isn't a problem Brian, it's getting them on to here. I don't know how many pictures we have on here, a thousand maybe, maybe more, and even at 1MB per pic that's only 1GB, not too bad really. I am going to make enquiries anyway, see what the situation is. Could be that there isn't a problem with fotopic, or any of the other hosting sites, hopefully.

I have just had a communication from Martin and fotopic is down because of a technical problem at Kingston Communications. That's a relief.

Very well explained in a similar thread over on RMWeb here http://www.rmweb.co.uk…c.php?f=4&t=35827&start=0  After the foam the more accurate information starts to appear on page 2.

Basically it would seem that misinformation has been posted to the effect that Fotopic (the business) has gone into liquidation (which is correct but not recent) and this has been linked to the current unavailability of Fotopic.net (the website) which was sold to and remains owned by another, and perfectly solvent, company.

Just read the info on RMWeb myself. A little bit confusing to say the least!

I just hope that the site comes back up again, otherwise  I'll have to reload all the images I've used in my various threads to my own server or another site such as flickr.
Wait and see I think.

I like photobucket and always use it for posting on here.

Sometimes it's a bit slow to copy from my files but I can live with that.

If you need to host your own files you can get a program called "Simple Server" from http://www.analogx.com/.  The program is incredibly easy to use.

You can find it in the networking section, best of all it's free.

OK, simple simon here, what's the diference between having the files on your computer and hosting them yourself? Is there any problem with security?

If you host them yourself from your own computer then you have every Googler and his dog entering your hard drive, surely?  Apart from that you will need a deal of bandwidth to manage a substantial number of hits.  Probably more than a domestic ISP will offer.

Plus your computer needs to be online 24/7 and 365 days a year.

Also you require a static IP address which they will charge extra for

You only really need a bit of server space on the net nowadays its a cheap as chips.
