How to upload onto the forum and where.

I intend to take some pictures of the goodies that I have accumulated over the last year or so in readiness for when I begin my long awaited layout.

It will be mostly loco's and some miscellaneous items that may be of interest.

The photographs will be uploaded to my Mac and stored in my picture files. What is the easiest way to retrieve them when uploading onto the forum and is there any specific treatment they need prior to being uploaded in order to make their format acceptable to the website ?

I have never done anything like this before so treat me a a complete simpleton. No offence taken.

Hopefully these shall be on for this weekend if I can work out how to do it.

Thanks again

Toto.

I too, use Photobucket.  However, since switching to Google Chrome picture postings from "my gallery" haven't worked.

I upload directly from my PC, onto this forum; Photobucket or Flickr and similar sites just make extra work. First make sure your pics are between 800 and 1024 pixels on the longest side and ensure the file size does not exceed forum limits. One reason for keeping image size at 1024 pixels or less is that smaller images are not so attractive to those who copy images, often for use in their own website or even selling to a magazine.

To get your pics uploaded, look towards top left of the Post window, you should find "Upload new photo for insertion" clicking on that opens a window that allows you to browse your computer hard disc for the file you want to upload, click on the file, then click on Upload; when the pic has uploaded you will see  thumbnails of pics you have uploaded (small copy of the image) click on the pic to insert the pic in your post. The image will be inserted at the current cursor location; it is best to have the cursor on the line below the last text you typed, or the last image you inserted, otherwise they appear touching, sometimes making it difficult to know where one image ends and the next starts, it also allows you to insert some text between images.

Quite right Mike, that's what I do here.  Photobucket is used for other forums where an IMG link is needed.  I just tested the insert existing photo function and it worked.  So, in the immortal words of Rosannadanna: "never mind".

Cheers Mike,

I think I should be able to follow that. I have about 25 or so loco's, should I  put 2 or 3 into one picture rather than individual images of each?

I don't want to either overload the site or bore people to death. The loco's will not be pictured on a layout so the only point of interest will be the loco's themselves.

I will probably include some images of other equipment / stock which I have purchased, just out of interest. This exercise will also stand me in good stead for whenieventually get round to building my layout as I intend running a  build timeline for it.

Again I don't want to fall foul of the system soif individual piccies would be overkill or boring, pleaseletme know.

Thanks again to everyone for replying to my post.

individual loco pics probably better, trying to get 2 or 3 into one pic means the detail will be less easy to see, also might not be easy to get all in focus. With individual pics viewers will be more inclined to look at details which would not show so well in a shot of 3 locos.

I would suggest no more than 4 or 5 pics to a post then people can look at however many they want and maybe come back later to look at a few more.  (not sure if there is a forum limit on number of pics per post)

One possible idea is to group the locos, example, if steam group by wheel arrangement say 4 pics of 4-4-0s, 5 of 0-6-0s, 5 of 4-6-0s, for diseasels Bo-Bos, Co-C0s, shunters MUs such groupings allow comparisons etc. You could also maybe do a number of views from different angles of the same loco.

Cheers MIKE

I do mine the same and it is okay for doing the odd one or two but, to clarify one point Mike has made (in red above), the 'post window' he is referring to is actually a 'post reply box' ie., you have to be actually on or making a reply in a thread to see the 'Upload new photo for insertion' tab.

However I think there maybe a better way for you to upload a shed load of images Tom.

On the page that opens when you've logged in (to the right of picture of the week) there is a link to Photo Gallery… clicking on this brings up the last six images uploaded by members, however, toward the upper left corner of this new box its gives two more links;- My Photos and All Photos … click the 'My Photos' one and it opens up the last six images you uploaded. Also, in the top right corner of your 'my photos' page is a link to Upload Photos where you can load them into your gallery in blocks of five… which is quicker than uploading one at a time as per Mike's way….. Once they're in there, you can insert them one at a time into a post using 'Insert existing photo from Gallery' seen at the top of every Post Reply Box.

PS: I'm not sure as I can't remember what happened the first time I uploaded but you may have to upload one photo as Mike has described before it will open your My Photos when doing it my way…

PPS: Clicking on 'view photos in gallery' under your avatar will also display all images in your gallery…..
