How easy it is for some one to find your home and possessions

G`day Folks,
A family member has just sent this YouTube clip to me. It shows how easy it is for someone to get information from an online image and find out exactly where it was taken.
Think about it?????…..it could be your railway room???

Fortunately my phone and camera are not sophisticated enough for geotagging, but it could be a problem if your not aware it's doing it.

I bet, like most of these things, the default on these devices is to turn it on.

So, I guess you just shouldn't take photos with your mobile phone, but use a proper camera, which doesn't have gps tracking/geo tagging…

Cheers, Gary.

Problem is Gary, like most of these things, I bet GPS will start to be included in all new cameras.

Sometimes progress is a real pain exclam:

That`s right Gary or just disable the GPS / Geotagging feature. My camera does not have these features but my phone does and at the moment it`s turned on…….I`ll have to sort that out.

Not a problem for me, my phone doesn't even take pictures!  It's not even turned on most of the time! The mobile phone is the curse of the modern world.  Roll on the day that some extra activity from the sun destroys the whole world's mobile phone network.  Maybe then I could go out for a meal, or travel on a train without some ignorant t*ss*r next to me telling the whole world his inane, trivial business.

Rant over, back to railway modelling.

Terry

PS  My camera is older than the Ark too!  And I like it that way!

Some photo editing apps don't save EXIF info, so if you crop or resize a photo before uploading EXIF could well be lost..

The other problem with not downsizing a photo before uploading is that there are sites and people that can & do copy and sell your pictures, smaller images are much less use to them.

In most cases all it takes is a right click and then click on "copy image", sites that host photos oftan have a clause in the very small print that says in effect that by uploading images to their site you give them parmission to use your image worldwqide for any purpose, this could be advertising or publishing without paying you anything. Many photo competitions also do the same..

Your photo, your copyright, any money made from it should be yours by right - so make it more difficult, post smaller pics, say max 800 pixels on any side, or add some form of copyright marking.

The EXIF data in an image might be useful to you – to remember where you took a photo for example, or on which camera. So it would be a shame to turn it off on the camera.

But it is easy to remove the data before uploading, and you can do it in Windows, you don't need the Irfanview plugin in the video.

Find the image on your computer and right-click on it.

Select Properties.

You then see this dialog:

Click the Details tab. You can then see what data the image contains.

Click the Remove Properties and Personal Information link.

You then get a choice of which data to remove. Even if you select "all", some non-sensitive data will remain, such as the focal length of the lens, etc.

Click OK.

A copy of the file will be created without the sensitive data. Make sure you upload the new copy image and not the original.

I doubt everyone would remember to do that Martin, before uploading a picture.

What about a Mac ?

This applies to GPS enabled equipment. Just use a camera without it (this was my first item on the check list when I bought a new camera, the salesperson thought I was strange not wanting it) or make sure it's disabled. It's great for geo-caching or Flickr, not so great for a photo of that car on the drive you're trying to sell. I used to have an Iphone which had a GPS app enabled, I stopped using it to take photographs.

Mind you, anybody perusing this site will see I live in Pointe-Claire, QC, and there are not that many Nigel's around here, plus my address is in the public domain anyway. It's always a sobering lesson to Google your own name and see what comes up.

I wonder what the connection was between the U-tuber and the software company?

Nigel
