One of these 2 photos was taken  with a bridge camera (Minolta A200) the other with a DSLR (Minolta 5D) the lens on the DSLR was a Tamron 17-50, both pics taken using built in flash, hence the slight burnout of the foliage bottom right.

Surprising as it may seem the depth of field of the bridge camera far exceeds that of the DSLR

DSLR, point of focus would appear to be the loco dome

Bridge

The main reason is that the lens on a bridge camera (or on a compact) has a considerably shorter focal length than that on a DSLR - unless you use an ultra wide angle or "fish eye" lens The bridge cam shot was at focal length 7.2mm, f2.8, the DSLR was at 50mm f5.6; The much smaller sensor on the bridge and compact cameras account for the use of much smaller focal length lenses; they are often quoted as Equivalent to the 35mm focal length (the 7.2mm on the bridge gives the same field of view as a 28mm on a full frame 35mm camera, but the actual focal length is what counts for depth of field.

So when I want shots of trains or locos on the layout I use the bridge, shots of the complete layout or largish parts of it then whichever camera is closest to my hand! Outdoors or "serious" shooting the DSLR every time, but for casual on a stroll shots then the lighter weight of the bridge and no need to lug a bag full of lenses about wins.
