Help!

Hullo, everyone,

I have been given a chance to do pictures and things for my Sunday talk on card modelling on 'Microsoft PowerPoint', a sort of display system. It's a steep learning curve but I'm getting there…

My question is this……what do I connect to what, and what with?????

To those in the know this will probably seem a silly question, but can I literally turn up with my 'pooter and plug it in to something that will project/show pictures?

Has anyone else used this system who perhaps can talk me through it or help me make sure it works on the day….please?

It's just a device to fiddle with when you can't think what to say next, Doof.

Someone will be along …..

Doof, if you have it all set on Powerpoint then just bring it on your computer and you can connect it to the gubbings at the show.  If they do not have the correct leads I bet there will be someone at the show doing a presentation who will have, and if not then they can just look at your screen!

Ah! A man at the same level of 'computer-eeze' as me!  Good point, Chris.  I imagine that PowerPoint is a sort of standar presentation system.

Once you get the hang of it its quite an easy system to use , basically its just your laptop connected to a projector and your presentation is controlled from the keyboard.

It had me really confused the first time I used it when I was working but it really is quite simple and as I am about as much use as a chocolate teapot as far as computers are concerned that is really saying something.

Not wishing to teach anyone to suck eggs but Microsoft Power point is easy to use (even I can use it)  Once you have connected your PC/Laptop to a compatible projector you call up the file and start a slideshow. Changing slides is by right clicking mouse or pressing return on the keyboard.

The time consuming is in creating the slides at the outset but you don't need a projector for that as it is done on your screen

If all the experts on here are already aware of this then please ignore the ramblings of a "daft Scotsman"

Have fun

Doug,
A projector will plug into your laptop just like any other external screen. Across the top row of keys on your laptop will be some odd-coloured notations, probably the same colour as an extra key on the bottom left, next to the Ctrl and/or Windows keys, marked 'Fn'.

This all together is an extra set of function (hence 'Fn') which your laptop can do over a standard desktop machine.

So, by playing about with some of the functions, you should be able to make the image on your laptop screen dis-appear and re-appear. When you physically connect the external screen / projector,  a similar button will logically connect to this screen and display the same image on both your screen (so you can face the audience) and the larger screen.

Work on your presentation using the Powerpoint programme and when it is complete, all you have to do is bring your lap top thing along to the show and we will wire it and you up !

Which means we will then use a projector to show your presentation while you talk

Why not just put the presentation on a memory stick?

That would only work if someone else brought a laptop…

I'll have my laptop with me as I keep all my loco CV settings on it so I can reprogram stuff through the sprog.  Happy to loan it to you for the presentation if required.

Bear in mind you don't "need" to use PowerPoint.  You can display anything that is on your computer via the projector so you can just have a series of photographs and show them in sequence if that is more convenient.  No need to learn to use a new program unless you want to.

Folks these days often use Microsoft Word or their favourite word processor to build a sequence of landscape format pages with words, diagrams and images. You can then "print" this as a PDF file with appropriate settings for screen (1024x768 is a good resolution) and then just display the pages in sequence using the Adobe PDF reader or the like.

If you want Doug I will happily take a Word document and generate the necessary for you.

Cheers

Yee-Ha!  I've got one of those, too! I shall have to bring a lap top anyway, but will put it on the stick as well, just in case. Looks like there are going to be plenty of thirsty, sorry, I mean kind people to help out so I've stopped worrying about that side of it now.

And dont forget the pillows for those who fall asleep …  Phill

Don't worry, I can keep Phill amused for hours without any problem as I have written 'PTO' on both side of an old beer-mat……

I'm doing a clinic at the NMRA national conference in September.  It's a presentation on Loksound, so I'm just plugging my laptop into the projector and people can watch the Lokprogrammer on the big screen.  The sounds all play through a Logitech 2.1 system plugged into the laptop earpiece, or through the loco on the Lokprogramming track.

Hope that helps.

I work with powerpoint quite a lot Doof and used to be IT desktop support at work.

Don't worry, between us we'll sort it.

Good idea backing up the presentation on the thumb drive/memory stick.

As you are creating your presentation, make sure that you SAVE on a regular basis. It SAVEs a lot of swearing.

cheers
