Interesting you say that, I have just finished the Metcalfe country station building (adapting it slightly to Southern Railway) apart from the chimneys - just look way to fiddly. Have been looking out for some decent white metal substitutes.

Are you talking about the chimney stack or just the pots?  I doubt you will find many (if any) whitemetal chimney stacks for sale.  There are whitemetal pots here:

For me its just the pots - the S&D models selection looks good though.

Take a biro tube (the ink bit not the outer pen) and cut off a section to length. Stick a cocktail stick into the end to spray with car primer and then paint with acrylic. Glue in placeSimples!

Wills SS46 building detail pack includes chimneys.  A bit of a waste if that's all you want though.

Dart casting have some quite nice whitemetal chimney pots - their pack has an assortment of styles.

Stacks are available, although not necessarily whitemetal. These are plastic, along with some white metal pots;

Probably too late now but just in case here is an easy way to do the Metcalf chimneys. Take a 4mm drill bit. Wrap the chimney piece round the end and put a dab of glue on. Slide the completed chimney pot off and stand on end until dry

Doug Dickson (Dooferdog) did a "How to" on Metcalfe chimneys but I can't find it ………..

If you have a look through his card modelling topics, I'm sure you'll find it. :thumbs

Woteesed!… and if you want some fluting on it wind thin strips of self adhesive labels around (cut with a sharp scalpel) before painting.

I use a cocktail stick as a former, followed by a dab of glue and this works well. Also Wills do a good range of chimney pots for those who do not want to use those supplied in the metcalfe kits.

Hi Guys
As a street tramway modeler with tenements to model chimney pots are the bane of my life, providing I NEVER even think about individually laying cobbles,:shock::shock: since a single stand alone tenement has up to 42 pots IF you ONLY go to 4 storeys.

I use any small diameter tube I can find. Biro tube, lollipop sticks (plastic are best as they are hollow), spaghetti (moisten it first to avoid shattering), also good for drainpipes. 4mm gas welding rod is good but you need a plumbers tube cutter and a prize beyond rubies was a quantity of small bore pneumatic tube nipples. The tube iself is good but as it tends to come in rolls straightening it out can be tricky.
Invest in a rotary hole punch which has a selection of sizes and you can punch out a holder to get better adhesion.

I dislike rolled tube pots as there is always a line where the joint is and I am willing to bet that a quick look around most layouts will show the dreaded line down at least one pot which slipped through the inspection process. Even whitemetal or resin pots need to checked for mould lines.
Just my take on this situation and it's also a snag you need to look for when you want to use round columns for station canopies.

Regards
Jim

I use plastic tube from the Evergreen range cut to length, painted and glue on. Works well.

I'm old, that's why I'm allowed to change my mind, when I can find it.

I have a range of Chimneys and Chimney pots available from Shapeways

Model Railway Structures by Wizmacnz - Shapeways Shops

I'm always prepared to add to the range if someone has a specific requirement.
