Following Novice,s thread on the Hornby church I thought I would have a go at improving a couple of Metcalfe kits, seeing how the roofs all look the same I rummaged around in the spares box and found some Wills tile sheet I removed the card roofs and used those as templates then glued the new roof in place also found some guttering and drain pipes to glue in place .
Not perfect but I think it enhances buildings .

The plastic roof certainly gives more depth.  I like the shelter building. It looks like you have used a black wash to highlight the tiles and, if I am right, it is quite effective.  Whatever you have done has worked.

An idea, rather than putting plastic sheets on top of card you could try using those metcalfe buildings as the template for plasticard and in effect create a whole new building.  It would be a big job - but just a thought!

I,ve already thought of that Novice it would be worth a try , took the card roofs of the shelter and the office on the goods shed and used them as a template but couldnt take the roof off the goods shed as it would have destroyed the roof trusses .

As much as I like Metcalfe kits, I agree with you about the sameness of the roofs. A good idea, this one, and a pleasing result.

Good work Brian.
Metcalf kits lend themselves well to this type of improvement and you certainly have produced a better building.

Thanks all for the comments it was a spur of the moment thing so thought I would try it but was done in a bit of a hurry going to do the station next so will take a bit more time with that , I think it provides a bit of a learning curve towards scratch building .

You are right Brian. You can learn quite a bit about building your own models while constructing a Metcalfe kit.
