Another station on the Devan and Summersett

Chard, is to be located on the centre peninsula , the building of described in http://yourmodelrailway.net/view_topic.php?id=7607&forum_id=52  , now has a basic plan




so over the next few weeks, etc ,this will slowly take shape.
I do know that the real Chard bears no resemblance to mine but it is my Empire !

Bearing in mind my seat of the pants approach to Granby I am probably the last person to make any suggestions…..so treat these with the disdain they probably deserve.

[1] Will you be able to shunt the Industry and cattle sidings when the DMU is at the platform face? Is there any way the loop could be used as the head shunt?

[2] Have you considered another point at the end of the loop (extreme right) giving you a short stub……..always useful when shunting

[1] Will you be able to shunt the Industry and cattle sidings when the DMU is at the platform face?  No, any shunting will have to wait until DMU has left & of course will have to be aware that that main line is not to be left bolcked when a DMU is immenent      Is there any way the loop could be used as the head shunt? The loop is where the goods train comes in first depending on what is to be shunted.

[2] Have you considered another point at the end of the loop (extreme right) giving you a short stub……..always useful when shunting My initial plan did have that but I want to keep some space around the Goods shed for vehicles to access loading/unloading

I think John, that I could easily add more tracks for Industries but this time, I thought nah, keep it simple,  well ,simpler than Watchit.

The first thing I will be doing is the Scalescenes viaduct joining Chard to the rest of world. I will take a photo shortly where this to go.

Given that to the left of the station the ground falls aways enough for a viaduct, how does the road transport get to the fruit siding ?

You will just have to wait until it is sorted out ! Possibly a level crossing past the cattle dock to the edge of the world.


Now the viaduct will be a 7 arch unit from Scalescenes (a new thread) where the black metal bar is shown.

That word you are thinking of is Charred. :cool:

Chuffnyard - yeah I suppose that could be one name especially those running kettles.


My Chard is a town and civil parish in the Somerset ( Summersett)  county of England & had rail lines in the past.

Of course that's true, Peter, and I'm not suggesting that Sol should do anything drastic to his track plan. It was more a case that the area below the factory and fuel (not fruit !) sidings is the entrance to the underground section, so the supposed road access might be limited.

Depending on the space available, (and any other decisions Sol makes), it might be possibile to bring a road entrance across the spur leading to these two sidings, the road being a continuation of that which feeds the Station building.

That's where I'd put it Stu - or even at the other side of the track with crossings as Sol has suggested.

Sol - I'm really looking forward to seeing this viaduct.  I love bridges - the bigger and longer, the better.  It will be interesting to see how it all goes together.  I notice it's going to be straight - don't suppose you could put a curve in it just for me could you ……………………:roll::roll::roll:

I have to purchase at least two lengths of track so I get the height right & the curvature - all will be explained in the Bridge Thread.

Based on a suggestion, as it is my normal practice to alter spelling of visible stations, Chard will now be spelt Charde.

That makes it look a little bit French, possibly with a soft 'ch' sound  -'Sharrrde'. :pedal

Bearing in mind the real Chard was the setting  at Cricket St Thomas for the very posh Tv comedy series "To the Manor Born" which starred the wonderful Penelope Keith then an upmarket version of spelling the new station in model form is very appropriate.

A model of the real Chard stations (there were actually three of them) would be a very interesting project.

Chard Junction on the Waterloo to Exeter line was one end of a very short branch line to Chard Town and that was only a couple of hundred yards from Chard Central , a highly unusual end on terminus between the Taunton to Chard ex GWR branch and the Chard Jct to Chard Town LSWR branch.

Plenty of interesting operational possibilities with that arrangement as it would have been quite normal for two trains from different companies to be seen arriving and departing in opposite directions from the same platform.


I am waiting to see what the forum jokers come up with if you ever use  the Somerset/Devon border town of WELLINGTON as a source of naming inspiration  and the cracks about being given the order of the boot etc.

My parcel from UK arrived today, a Bachmann Class 25 to use the chassis for a Silver Fox Electric loco body - that took about 40 odd minutes to remove the circuit board, hard wire pickups to motor, removed seats, etc - all sorted & then into the points for Charde.

Some now installed - time to watch a bit of the idiot box & have a coffee.




Points will be manually operated with dead frogs so no switching required.

Middle spur - small fuel depot
LH spur - warehouse or something similar.

 

From the other end:




The biggest passenger train will be a 3 car DMU.


 

Finished side facias & diagram panel; now to start getting trains to run to Charde.

Charde looks like a nice quiet little place to spend a day or two during summer ………………….:cheers
