With winter nearly upon us, and long nights spent on the workbench, building tress and all the other monthly goodies that I have lined up for you, I thought it was time to reveal the winter project !

This has been done before, but not by this forum/club so here goes.

Build a fully working layout in a Box-file

My idea is for a small layout that you will be able to try out all the monthly projects on at the same time as building something very different, it can be any scale, and you can use one box-file or two, with a another as the fiddle-yard, you can only use a maximum of three points, but the track plan is up to you, this layout can be either DC or DCC.

It can then be used as a small switching layout ( if you think hard about the track plan) the cost will be as much as you want it to be, but if you follow most of the upcoming monthly projects then it will be a cheap little project,  and also it can be used as small diorama to photograph your locos and stock on :thumbs

I have already brought my three box-files, and have played around with a few track plans, Soon I will be starting a thread, so does anybody fancy joining me ?

Okay - count me in. Does the 3 point limit include the fiddle yard, or can we use more points to ease fiddling?

I have three box files sitting in front of me now. If I am allowed to pile them on top of each other, we could have a micro underground diorama :mutley

What a superb idea!
I'll definitely be entering this project, I wonder if I could fit another harbour into one…?

Three points total, plus by the time you have a point in the fiddle-yard you will have no space left to fiddle

Shame! I was going to ask Dave (Eldavo) to make me a sound project for a DCC chip in an underground train which included a well known phrase!

I'll make one for you if you want to use a Loksound decoder, Geoff.

I've never done anything like this either - can I use a 6ft long box file ?:roll:

I'll have to read up on "micro-layouts" but by the time I've got my 2 trees in there, there's no room for anything else :hmm

Not me I'm afraid.

Progress on Newcastle Emlyn has suffered enough and after the tree project, which is part of the NE development anyway, I'll be concentrating on my main layout.

Having made the Pentrecourt Halt Diorama I can, however, heartily recommend this project to anyone who is hesitant about starting a bigger layout.

These smaller projects are fantastic for practicing the skills that are needed for a bigger layout, with an added benefit of getting something FINISHED at a reasonable cost and in a reasonable amount of time.

I will be watching progress on the micro layouts with interest.

Well done Alan.

A couple of questions:
Do the boxfiles have to be permanently connected together, or must they be able to be separated  ?
Do the lids have to be closeable ? ( maybe difficult with trees,,,)

These are all questions that I have thought about and more, for me I will be joining the three box's to-gether, some might decide to have the option of leaving them separate, as for the lids……………………:hmm I think the challenge would be to keep them attached and working, the same with the fronts !

Stu

I guess that you have done this project before ?

Geoff

You could aways have one on top of the other and have a scenery above, or a bridge over a town etc.

John

Jump aboard

Jeff

How about a small American Ho layout ?

Come on guys this is a great chance to test a lot of modelling skills in a very small area, I will be using a lot of re-cycled bits and Scalescene buildings and papers for most of the rest, so the cost will be very low, we have four of us at the moment, but anybody can join when they want to :thumbs

Alan,
Yes, I've done one before, but I quite fancy doing another one. With Doug's masterclass on card buildings, and the latest Scalsecenes Low Relief shops, it would almost be criminal not to have a go.

Thanks for a great idea Alan, however, I am limited to my little Liberia layout and Upton to Dunton, without taking on more. That said, I will watch with interest.

Right,I'm going a bit down the Les route here with a China Clay Dries Layout.2 scenic boxfiles, one for fiddle yard…will probably be a traverser,so I can save the points for the scenic bit.
I've got plenty of photo reference, and already have some China Clay wagons…panniers and 45xx's.
The hard part is going to be the planning. And I'll need a name for it…..Once I come up with something,I'll start a thread…
:hmm
