February Monthly Project

Is there one in the pipeline?

Not sure if the monthly project programme is continuing, but if it is, I have a suggestion if there is someone willing to host it.

It is simply using an Airbrush. Much is asked and written about on the subject of airbrushing, and there is clear evidence on this forum of a great deal of expertise. But I also think I have seen that there are several of us who may already have the gear (I have had mine for two years now) but for one reason or another have never actually started to use it. There are also others who would seem to want to get some gear and get started.

I was not thinking of a tutorial of how to use an airbrush, or a list of what is required as both are available in abundance. More of a "paint something" project for the month which, if we chose to join in, would mean that we would HAVE TO get the equipement out of the box and finally find out what it can do for us.

Perry's recent description of "misting" layers of paint fascinates me so I don't really know why I don't just get on with it?

Alan had previously asked me to do a February project. It was to be a small plastikard scratchbuild, to encourage non-scratchbuilders to have a go.

However, Jeff (Gwent Rail), did say that his project might not be finished by the end of January, due to various circumstances.

I suggested delaying the start of mine to give him more time - even to allow his to run until perhaps the end of February.

I'm happy to put mine on hold for the time being, particularly if someone with airbrushing experience could do as you suggest. I'm very much a beginner on a very steep learning curve, picking up most of my limited knowledge on the subject by searching the internet - especially YouTube - for tutorials. I therefore don't consider myself qualified to lead such a project. I would be very interested in following one by someone who is, though.

Me too ! My air brush has been in the box, unused, for about 3 years, just never had the courage to get it out and have a go.

I'd love to do this but have to use my airbrush in the garage. I went in there today and it was minus 1C. Not a good temperature for spraying paint.

No good asking Gordon.

He doesn't need a 'airbrush.

OK, if you would like an airbrushing project I will step up as offer to host it if you like. I have been airbrushing for well over thirty years and edited books on it and written magazine articles on the subject way back in the 70's. I even did a bit of photo retouching with an airbrush in the days before Photoshop.

So, what do you want to see? Suggestions please…

To me, when railway modelling, the biggest advantage with airbrushing is not for the misting effect but more for the very fine and even coverage that can be achieved. I don't hand paint locos and rolling stocke any more and I use the Airbrush to simulate rain splatter on buildings. Most of my weathering is done using washes. Over-use of the airbrush is something to be avoided.

Ralph ;-)

It will be finished one day…

As some of you know, I've been a little pre-occupied with family matters for a few weeks and had little chance to continue my project.

What nobody knew was that I've also been having a bad spell with my eyes again and close work has been difficult at times and impossible at others.
I suggest that I suspend my project for a while and allow the airbrush one to start on 1st February, followed by Perry's on 1st March and hopefully I'll be able to carry on in April. (My next appointment with the eye clinic is late February, so I should be more able shortly after any treatment they decide on then).

Sorry for the delay guys, but if you can't see, you can't do (Thank heavens I recently bought a 24" widescreen monitor) :thumbs:thumbs

Ralph: Thanks for the kind offer which I'm sure many members will be keen to follow. It appears from comments on here that several people have airbrushes that they have never used.

Perhaps a quick run through of assembly/disassembly and cleaning, followed by paint mixing and thinning tips, rounded off with how to achieve various effects with the airbrush. What NOT to do would also be valuable.

Jeff: Sorry to hear about your eye trouble. I hope it gets better soon. I was aware of some of your other problems and my best wishes are with you for them. I'm happy to postpone my monthly project until March and hope you will be able to continue yours after that.

Fantastic Ralph. :doublethumb

Start at the beginning - pressures required etc. etc. then on to thinning the various types of paint, how long can you leave the paint in the airbrush before it dries, the actual process of painting, weathering techniques, cleaning the darned thing etc. etc. ……………the list goes on !!!

May I suggest locking this thread then, Jeff? Otherwise there may be some confusion resulting in posts going in both this and the new thread.
