I was thinking trains were used in world war so i was thinking of an idea. I cant do this but im sure someone else may use the idea.

How about an old railway based on an old war railway, I think there is some locos they sell which are like trains they used in war. It would be hard to look up some old specific ones and it would have to be hard to find all olden things. You could also make a war scene with some trenches with fighters, or a scene with a fight going on. This is just an idea but.

When it comes to the scenery, there's lots of Airfix models available in roughly OO gauge of course.

i have seen a few layouts that involve a war scene, not so much fighting but loading and unloading of vehicles. The British Army still use trains today, i spent 48hrs on a train heading for Poland on a large exercise. i think the train delivering rubber dog poo had priority over us. if you enjoy modelling armoured vehicles it is a great idea for a layout.

The only problem with modelling a war scene, will be that it will have to European based, or a DAD'S army take off :hmm

How about a bomb damaged bit of city or somewhere in the middle of an air raid?  Better still, a south coast port during a German air raid: boats, planes, trains, AA guns! 

Damaged, incompete buildings,  scarred scenery, twisted track.  wait a moment, all this is starting to sound very familiar hmm

That looks some layout, I really like the last photo, lots of detail put into that scene.

Trouble is i think Young Ben is thinking of something with bombs going off and gunfire as the train runs round

Mind you in the first world war the german army had large rail mounted artillery i think one of the largest was BIG Bertha they used to shell Paris.

Talking of bombs going off on the layout - does anyone remember the (Triang?) exploding munitions wagon from the 60s.  Part of the Battle Space series.  I had one, together with a rocket launcher AND the turbo car :cool::cool::cool: I wish I still had them - they're quite pricey on the collectibles market.

We are showing our age there Tim i very much remember them aswell as you say they do fetch a great deal in the collectors market today.

Do you remember the Mimic motorway i think it was called that was a triang thing?

Someone on MRF recently was talking about doing a layout based on a naval base.  I reckon an RAF base would be the go but you would need plenty of space as airfield and dockyards are big.

 

Transporting military hardware by rail is easier as Maeklin and Roco have a big range of rail cars transporting tanks etc.  But this is all European outline.  If you wanted to do UK outline then you would be scratchbuilding it.

 

I quite fancy doing something like this at some point as I am very interested in military stuff too.  I just haven't hit on the right idea.  I was toying with RAF Leuchars or Rosyth naval base but the space would be huge.  Nuclear sub's in OO would be pretty big as would a runway.

It would have to be a WW2 RAF base.  I understand that there's very little movement or activity on the modern ones.

Last year when i went camping for a week we found an air base with a visotrs centere. It also had an area overlooking the runway. Luckly we went when we did as about 20 fighter jets had to take off for some reason.

Some places like the one i went to are still used alot for traning and survalnce (it was close to the ocean) so while we were there there we heaps every hour flying over :D

By the way i wasent going to be making the layout it was just an idea :D

changed my mind, the cars are used on the road, the blue jag is one.
