He has no computer therefore I offered to ask the following questions for him.
Only space available 72" x 18", therefore a layout comprising of 2 baseboards 36" x 18" which will be stored in a wardrobe.
Would like passenger and goods facilities, I would assume a branchline and tank loco's. Era 50/60's [the days of his youth], Southern or Great Western, therefore any track plan suggestions would be appreciated, perhaps he is asking to much in such a limited space.
Analogue or DCC control for such a small layout, any thoughts?
Thanks

Also storing in a wardrobe worries me regards possible damage, could he not fix it on a wall with hinges so it could be folded upright.

If I were you, I would show your friend Terry's thread 'Small OO layout for use in a care home'.
See here ; http://yourmodelrailway.net/view_topic.php?id=12285&forum_id=21 This layouts measurements (including fiddle yard is 102" long.
My small layout Shunting Plank/Puzzle ('Linden Ford') is 53" long and based on an Inglenook siding. See here ; http://yourmodelrailway.net/view_topic.php?id=12116&forum_id=21
These layouts should give your friend some ideas on a smallish layout and fiddle yard.
Another option could be the simple Time Saver style of layout which is built on a 4' board (48"), which allows for a 24" fiddle yard. Both of these plans are 18" x 72" in size.
Something like this…
Or a variation, like this…
Cheers, Gary.
