This is a mad capped idea that I've had a look at. Having been challenged by Holly to see who can construct a better layout in a small space, I had a look about for suitable restricted areas in which to produce a model. During my room tidying mission, I came across a few shoeboxes: Perfect! All bar one are your standard shoebox size. The lone box I'm going to use is a mere 13" x 5", so I'm going to fit an N gauge BLT in there. There's not much room so it's simply the platform, station building and main & bay platform tracks. I may model a low relief goods shed behind the bay platform to justify some extra moves. Most operation though is going to be passenger orientated using a Farish GWR Railcar. This then site's the layout deep in GWR territory.

So, time for the plan. It's not 100% to scale, but tomorrow will see me possibly preparing the shoebox for it's "fun".


Any thoughts on what I may possibly be getting myself into?

What about a nice little Z gauge Austrian or Swiss set up for something different, maybe with electrical overheads  :D

Great idea!  And in Z scale you could almost put a helix in there!

Too small for me I'm afraid guys. I'm pushing it with N gauge and with a somewhat lack of stock at a good price, I'm going to stick with my N gauge plans.

That's not to say it's a good idea (if that makes sense), just for the purpose and the fact I have a few lengths of N gauge trackwork available to hand.  :wink:

Only yesterday i was thinking about a little side project in N gauge

Something like the size of Franks Pen y Bont but in N

I am a bit weary thou whether my eyesight will be good enough.

I think i may well do it just to see if i am capable of producing something a little bit decent in that scale.

So if you do i will hows that for a challenge

Sam, if you look at my layout thread (Evolution) you will see the latest edition to the fleet, and by buying from the USA at around 1/3 of the price over here.  

So it got me thinking, how about a low relief ice house (these were used to fill box cars carrying produce with ice, pre refrigeration days, ice was shovelled thru a hatch in the roof) or perhaps a logging layout, loads of scope there for scenic work and with the correct crossings you could probably get 3 tracks in.

This is going to sound daft but I just trying to get you to think outside of the box so to speak, challenge yourself with something unfamiliar  :wink:

Hmmm, certainly food for thought Lawrence. In the space available though I would prefer to go with something I know well enough to justify the space I have at my disposal. Maybe some On30 will follow! I've admired the gauge and fancied it for some time now.

Brian, if your up for a challenge, lets do it.. 8)  :twisted:  I doubt Holly will get round to starting any time soon, so let's us have a go at it.  :)

i'm am sure your eyes are looking forward to bringing Lostwithiel back to its former glory.

Plus remember i have never tried N gauge i could end up making a total pigs ear of it.

Careful Jeff, have van - can travel!  Being the expert you are at wiring you may find me dumping a layout on your doorstep when I next head for Blaenavon :roll:

Bring it to Newport club, Chris and I'll get some real "experts" to fix it :!:  :!:        

Trouble is, it may come back to you with a track gauge of 18.83mm :!:  :!:  :!:

If they can fit the same amount of track in the same area then you are on :twisted:
