B&M

Hurrow!

Searching for some acrylic mirror sheet about A4 size to try an 'speriment, I couldn't get anything at a reasonalble price, so started to trawl the 'Cheapy' shops for ordinary small glass mirrors that I could cut up.

I found a shop called B&M, that I have never been into before, and like trees, they seem to have branches everywhere…[Sorry]

I found a 4ft x 1ft mirror advertised as a 'Door Mirror' for £5.99p in a white plastic frame. Chippendale it ain't, but it has proved to be pretty good 2mm mirror glass which cut easily enough with a glass cutter after I realised it wasn't plastic.

I have decided to try it out under my footbridge, and have used it as I did in France to re-direct window light to where I am working.

Poop-poop,

Douglas

[That's it, £5.99 spent this week on frivolities, I'll have to lie down in a darked room to get over the trauma…]

Surely Doug, if you lie in a darkened room, you won't get the benefit of your extravagance …………………………I was thinking you could gaze in awe at the guy on the other side of the window you've just bought……………………………

I visited a B & M shop once - a bit like Poundland only half the price ………………………………oh, and you have to dig a bit to find what's in the piles ……………….brilliant shops for bag-women ………………..

I've always found Fortnums good for mirrors…………………

Great idea. I got the stones which made up my wall from B&M so it can be useful!

And I found Chinchilla dust in our local B&M, which is great for adding texture to things.  I can't remember the price, but it was certainly cheap.  As I understand it, although it is a chain of shops, they do not necessarily all stock the same products.
Just out of interest, why are you putting a mirror under your footbridge?

Hullo Michael,

'Cos I want there to be light at the end of the tunnel….Seriously, I want to disguise the edge of the backscene support board as it passes over the 'river', in other words, to give an impression of light in that area. The problem in illustrating it is as soon as you point a camera at it to show the effect, you get a picture of the camera lens, so herewith a couple of slanted shots which I hope will explain somewhat.

Please excuse the large green mattress in the river, I'm still 'seenicking' the old fashioned way, waiting for the PVA to dry under a piece of dyed hanging basket liner before pulling off the outer layers etc.

Without the mirror there would only be a view of a piece of M.D.F.

Its given me an idea thanks Doug. I've got a road tunnel to take off scene with absolutely no depth to it and I  cant angle it at all to disguise it. Im wondering if I black out the sides and then put in a vertical strip of mirror, angled slightly down to reflect the road surface leading in. . Might work ?  :hmm

Some experimentation methinks.  :thumbs

Hi!

Have you room/scope for this? That's a scene printed onto tracing paper, stuck across the back of a 3 inch long tunnel and natural light allowed to fall on it. An led in a ping-pong ball would do the same.

Hmmm not sure. Depth I have if weird lol its just a tunnel entrance cut down and placed at an angle against a brick wall buttress. Ill look tomorrow and see if its worth trying to create a bit more depth to it but it will basically have to look like a road going into a tunnel rather than a bridge.  :thumbs

Ah!  I see!.  In my head I had the mirror lying flat underneath the bridge.  I once saw a layout that used all sort of mirror placements to make what was a relatively small layout appear much larger.  It was clever…. as is your idea with the bridge.
