At Crewe on 23rd July 1989 Class 87 Electric Locomotive number 87 032 leads Mk3 DVT number 82114 through Crewe with the 1430 London Euston to Blackpool North.

On the same day Class 87 Electric Locomotive number 87 012 with the 1010 Glasgow Central to London Euston
.

Class 87 number 87 014 named "Knight of the Thistle" at London Euston on 16th March 1989.  In the background can be see a Class 90 which was a much upgraded version of the Class 87.

In almost exactly the same spot is number 87 018 named "Lord Nelson" on the same day.  At this time there were many subtle differences between the versions of the Intercity livery.

The other end of the same locomotive.

Still at London Euston, but moving forward four years to 13th June 1993 is this view of Class 87 number 87 001 named "Royal Scot" in the company of Class 86 number 86 257.  87 001 was the first Class 87 to be built and was named "Stephenson" in 1975.  Just two years later the locomotive was renamed and the "Stephenson" nameplates were transferred to 87 101.

Class 87 number 87 026 named "Sir Richard Arkwright" at London Euston on the same date.

A useful comparison of the Class 87 and their forerunner the Class 86 at London Euston on 13th June 1993.  On the left is Class 87 number 87 018 named "Lord Nelson" at the head of the 1325 London Euston to Glasgow.  On the right is Class 86 number 86 210 at the head of the 1350 London Euston to Preston.

In the early hours is Class 87 number 87 017 named "Iron Duke" at Crewe on 19th February 1994.  Taken at 0230 in the morning!

Finally Class 87 number 87 101 "Stephenson" taken at Toton Depot on 29th August 1998.  Alongside is Class 59/1 number 59 101 named "Village of Whatley".  The similarity with the later Class 66 is very obvious!

87 035 was the last of the standard 87's built and is one of only 3 locos preserved in the UK currently based a LNWR Crewe.
