Midland Railway Yard Crane

This yard crane stands on the site of the former Green Ayre Station in Lancaster. It was formerly located at Hornby further along the line. While I'm given to understand that it is painted in it's original colours I've been unable to confirm this from official records. However, given that most companies including the LYR used a similar paint scheme it is probably correct!

Very useful pictures.  Thanks for those.  Pity about the usual retail park and council flats in the background. What a depressingly bland country the U.K. has become?

An interesting picture. It would appear to have been formerly located in a building, viz the spigot at the top and bottom, and the evidence of the chain wheel being of such a diameter as to clear the deckhead when it was swung around. My guess is that it was once in a goods shed and in order to 'display' it, it has been fitted with two welded brackets.  Here is a GWR model in use, photo courtesy of my chum Chris Lloyd.

I've got to agree with you there! When I think of what used to be on this site, i.e. Green Ayre Station and loco depot, compared to the wide areas of grass and a skateboard park we have now! I'm delighted that this relic of our past survived though! I'll have a look at Hornby Station if possible and see how it was actually sited. It does look like an interior derrick does'nt it!
